Today is 988 day! 💜🎗️🩵
988 Reasons: Your reason is reason enough. This theme reminds us that you don’t have to be in crisis to reach out to 988. Whatever you’re facing, big or small, your reason for seeking support is reason enough.
What is 988?
988 is a free 24/7 mental health and substance use crisis lifeline that anyone than can use via phone, text, or online chat. The lifeline connects you to a trained crisis team member on the other end.
Does the regular lifeline number still work?
Yes. 988 was implemented federally in summer of 2023. Just as you would dial 911 for a physical emergency, you can just as easily access 988 for a mental health crisis or moment of need. In that moment 988 is all you need to know. However, the regular 1-800 number still works and connects to the national su***de prevention lifeline.
Will I be talking to someone locally?
If you call with a local area code, you will be directed to the nearest crisis center. Four Rivers Behavioral Health has a contract with the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline. The local crisis center will be more familiar with regional and local resources and works to decrease the barrier of access to care.
What if someone doesn’t want to call the lifeline themselves?
You can actually call on behalf of someone and the trained crisis team member on the other end will talk you through next steps on how to help and making sure safety of all remains in place.
