Solana Beach Eco Rotary Club We educate ourselves and our community about environmental challenges and solutions.

We are a service organization based in Solana Beach, California, one of 34,000 Rotary clubs around the world, part of a community of 1,200,000 Rotarians who value service above self. As an Eco Rotary Club, our service focuses on how we - all of us - relate to each other and the living web of which we are a part. Ecology focuses on "relationships between living organisms and their environment." While we share the growing concern that we are living beyond our means ecologically, we share in the vision that all Earth's inhabitants may enjoy a high quality of life in harmony with nature. Our intent is to understand the challenge of living sustainably, and to identify, implement and communicate best practices in our neighborhood and throughout Rotary.

On a beautiful fall day, we enjoyed a field trip to Escondido Creek Conservancy’s (ECC) Elfin Forest Interpretive Center. Our hosts were Conservancy board member Kevin Barnard and board president Richard Murphy. Founded in 1991, the Conservancy works to preserve and restore the Escondido Creek Watershed — more than 75 square miles extending from Bear Valley above Lake Wohlford, through Escondido and San Marcos, to coastal habitats at San Elijo Lagoon and Cardiff Reef. The watershed links inland preserves, urban communities, and coastal ecosystems, connecting wildlife corridors and protecting water quality. Both of our guides have been an integral part of ECC for years and have watched it grow.

We had a beautiful shady hike along the creek while hearing all about ECC’s many conservation programs, including water quality protection, wildfire resilience, rewilding, invasive plant and insect removal, and steelhead trout and box turtle conservation.

ECC’s impressive work combines conservation with education for both children and adults. The Escondido Creek Conservancy is a natural treasure in San Diego County. Definitely check this out! https://www.escondidocreek.org/

Last Saturday, Solana Beach Eco Rotary hosted a fun service project, turning unwanted T-shirts into upcycled dog toys for the San Diego Humane Society. Our club member, Niels Lund provided wonderful live background music while we worked. We made new friends along the way, including Jose Cruz from the Lions Club. We also had several members from the community who joined us. We were honored to welcome District Governor Jeb Bakke and District Governor-Elect Michael Brunker, who joined us in making toys. Michael even took one of his creations to a special dog, Megan. Past District Governor Luis Carranza also stopped by near the end of the event with more T-shirts for our next project. Many thanks to the club members who participated and warmly welcomed the community members who joined us. Together we created 83 colorful dog toys of all sizes that will be delivered this week. We also collected $50 for Polio eradication as the event fell on World Polio Day. Altogether, it was a very enjoyable and fruitful afternoon.
