Did you know? Bumble bees are not honeybees! There are between 700 and 800 native bee species in San Diego County. š
The western honeybee, Apis mellifera, is a non-native species originating from Europe and Asia. This species is reared in captivity for agricultural pollination and honey production, but wild colonies have been established throughout the U.S. These colonies can survive through the winter, and because of this, have evolved to store honey as a reserve food supply. That honey can be harvested for human consumption. š
The āSave the Beesā movement is for native bees, not honeybees. Bumble bees are native bees, and there are 5 native bumble bee species in San Diego. š
