Earlier this month, our team joined the City of Gloucester, Massachusetts to sit down one-on-one with local small business owners and talk about energy efficiency solutions built around their individual needs.

No two businesses operate the same way. Landlords, tenants, nonprofits, and other local organizations all have different buildings, priorities, and opportunities to save energy. That is why the chance to listen, ask questions, and have real conversations is so valuable.

A little look at what goes into a site walk with our team.

We’re checking the equipment, but we’re also looking at everything around it: access, timing, operating conditions, and what needs to keep running while work moves forward.

Those details help shape the project before anything gets installed.

That’s a big part of why being on site matters. The building tells you things the plan on paper cannot.

Public-sector progress happens at more than one scale.

Earlier this week, we looked at Build for Mass and the role financing can play in moving municipal infrastructure priorities forward.

In City of Everett, we saw the community side of that work: walking business to business with Electrify Everett and La Comunidad Inc., answering questions, and helping make energy-efficiency opportunities easier to understand.

Big-picture strategy matters. So does the block-by-block work that brings opportunity closer to the people and businesses it is intended to serve.

Funding can move a project forward. Infrastructure strategy determines what should move first.

Massachusetts’ new $75 million Build for Mass program will support municipal infrastructure, clean energy, climate resilience and economic development projects, with applications expected later this year.

For cities and towns, this is an opportunity to look beyond one upgrade and build a coordinated plan around buildings, budgets, timing and long-term priorities.

Massachusetts municipalities have a new funding resource to explore.

The Commonwealth’s new Build for Mass program offers flexible, low-interest financing to help communities move infrastructure projects forward and address funding gaps.

The program may also support larger capital projects that fall outside OBR eligibility or require additional financing to help close funding gaps.

Eligible projects include:
• Clean energy improvements
• Downtown revitalization
• Coastal resilience
• Water, sewer, stormwater, and streetscape infrastructure
