Audubon’s legislative initiative to ban rodenticides has already been passed by both chambers of the Rhode Island General Assembly. Now, the bill is on its way to Governor McKee’s desk for his signature. Some critics are encouraging the Governor to veto the bill, arguing that restricting anticoagulant rodenticides will leave communities defenseless against rats.
In a new opinion piece in The Providence Journal, Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Executive Director, Jeff Hall, shares the impacts that rodenticides have on wildlife, and explains how Rhode Island can embrace rodent-management strategies that work for people and wildlife alike.
Jeff shares: “The legislation takes a thoughtful, phased approach over several years. Restrictions are implemented gradually, giving municipalities, businesses, pest-management professionals, and property owners time to adapt. The bill also includes exemptions for important public health emergencies and creates a municipal Integrated Pest Management pilot program, which Audubon will support, to help communities evaluate and implement alternative strategies before broader restrictions take effect.”
