Our Mission
The mission of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island is to protect birds, other wildlife and their habitats through conservation, education and advocacy, for the benefit of people and all other life. Who We Are
The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is an independent, not-for-profit environmental organization dedicated to statewide environmental education, conservation and advocacy. Establi

shed in 1897, it is the oldest environmental organization in the state. Audubon is one of the largest environmental educators in Rhode Island, reaching well over 20,000 students of all ages each year. Since acquiring its first wildlife refuge in 1924, Audubon Society of Rhode Island has grown to become one of the largest private landholders in Rhode Island. It now protects nearly 10,000 acres of wildlife habitat for future generations of Rhode Islanders. Many Audubon wildlife refuges are open to the public for wildlife viewing and enjoyment. Its vigilant advocacy programs and partnerships have kept the public and government informed of threats to the environment for over 100 years. Members of Audubon are kept informed through the Report, and eWing, our monthly email newsletter. Please consider joining the thousands of committed Audubon Society of Rhode Island members as we preserve and protect our precious environment together. Audubon Society of Rhode Island is not affiliated with the National Audubon Society.

We’re always looking for ways to make our facilities more accessible, and we’re excited to announce that we just installed a Tina’s Table at the Audubon Nature Center & Aquarium!

Tina’s Table is the creation of Tina Guenette, the CEO of RAMP real access motivates progress, who teamed up with The Steel Yard to design a custom picnic table that celebrates function, accessibility, and inclusion. The design features bench seating that resembles powered or manual wheelchairs and includes space for up to three functional wheelchairs.

Audubon’s legislative initiative to ban rodenticides has already been passed by both chambers of the Rhode Island General Assembly. Now, the bill is on its way to Governor McKee’s desk for his signature. Some critics are encouraging the Governor to veto the bill, arguing that restricting anticoagulant rodenticides will leave communities defenseless against rats.

In a new opinion piece in The Providence Journal, Audubon Society of Rhode Island’s Executive Director, Jeff Hall, shares the impacts that rodenticides have on wildlife, and explains how Rhode Island can embrace rodent-management strategies that work for people and wildlife alike.

Jeff shares: “The legislation takes a thoughtful, phased approach over several years. Restrictions are implemented gradually, giving municipalities, businesses, pest-management professionals, and property owners time to adapt. The bill also includes exemptions for important public health emergencies and creates a municipal Integrated Pest Management pilot program, which Audubon will support, to help communities evaluate and implement alternative strategies before broader restrictions take effect.”

If you want to see rodenticides banned in Rhode Island, helping to improve the health of our raptor populations and other wildlife species, urge Governor McKee to approve this legislation! Have you ever noticed the gourd-shaped birdhouses on our refuges? Those are Purple Martin houses! In the Eastern United States, Purple Martins have come to rely almost exclusively on human-provided housing for nesting.

Interested in learning more about these fascinating birds? Join Audubon for a presentation on Purple Martins and enjoy a short walk to the field habitat to observe them as they roost in their gourd-shaped birdhouses. We’ll also watch for other flying foragers like swallows and swifts, and if we are lucky, we might get to observe bats and owls!
