ABOUT

The Rockefeller Archive Center was established in 1974 initially to gather, preserve, and make accessible the records of the Rockefeller family and their far-reaching philanthropic endeavors, such as the Rockefeller Foundation, and Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The Archive Center has grown and today holds the archives of major foundations, cultural organizations, research institutions, and many individuals associated with these organizations. The Rockefeller Archive Center preserves and makes accessible its ever-expanding holdings, which include the records of over forty organizations and over one hundred individuals. Today is Girl Scout Founder’s Day, in honor of the birthday of the woman who started the Girl Scouts, Juliette Gordon Low. Materials relating to the Girl Scouts can be found in several of our collections, including this card bearing the Girl Scout Promise.

Fun fact: one of our new Board Members, Noorain Khan, previously served as the National Board President of Girl Scouts of the USA!

It’s Friday! Raise your hand if you’ll be doing some crafting this weekend to unwind. 👋

This photo comes from the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial (LSRM) records and depicts eastern European needleworkers demonstrating and exhibiting their skills in New York City between 1919 and 1929. They are assumed to have been members of the Ukrainian Needlecraft Guild, an organization which operated under the auspices of the People’s Institute.

If this image makes you want to learn more, head over to RE:source to read “American Fabric: The Ukrainian Needlecraft Guild and “Americanization” in the Progressive Era.”

We’re in the last week of and are back with our final video. Katie and Danielle are helping us finish out October by sharing their favorite items in the RAC collections and answering the question everyone wants to know: do you have to wear white gloves or not? Finally, they’re trying to help you figure out what defines an archive.

Thanks for tuning in and keep reaching out to ask us (almost) anything. You never know when Katie and Danielle might return to answer more!

You might be surprised to find out just how much our collection comes in the form of audio and visual (a/v) material. The RAC has a dedicated film vault here on site AND an archivist dedicated to the care of a/v material. Meet Brent, our Sound and Moving Image Archivist!

Brent’s work includes preserving a/v material, helping researchers to access it, and mentoring our Selznick Fellows each year (among many other things).

Say hello to Brent 👋

The United Nations headquarters in New York City has a Rockefeller connection: in 1946, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. purchased a plot of land from Manhattan developer William Zeckendorf, Sr., and donated it to the international peacekeeping body to build upon. His purchase price of $8.5 million is roughly equivalent to more than $150 million today.

John D. Rockefeller, Jr. had a long history of supporting international cooperation. He was also the largest funder of the League of Nations, a precursor to the UN that existed from 1920 to 1946.

Danielle and Katie are back to continue the discussion! Today we’re finding out what they each consider to be the *weirdest* thing they’ve come across in the collections here. This may not go how you think it’s going to go!

Also, Danielle always has her Assistant Director for Access hat on and has asked that we make sure you all know that neither of the unusual items mentioned in the video are available to researchers. We know it’s a bummer but, for preservation reasons, these items cannot come out of archival storage. At least we all get to hear about them!

Check out Senior Curator Michele Beckerman’s RE:source story about Radburn, NJ, a planned model community developed by the City Housing Corporation in the late 1920s. You can learn about early efforts in (what we now might call) impact investing, the Great Depression’s effect on housing developments, and how the community excluded Black and Jewish buyers.

An interesting story AND great images, all at the link in our profile!
