It's New York's Invasive Species Awareness Week -- a time to understand and recognize the harm invasive species can have on landscapes, ecosystems.

Caring for sites like Philipsburg Manor, Washington Irving's Sunnyside, and Van Cortlandt Manor means preserving more than historic buildings -- it also means protecting the natural landscapes that tell their stories.

Invasive species can threaten native plants, disrupt ecosystems, and alter the historic character of the places we work to protect. That's why our focus extends beyond just buildings and collections.

With help from organizations like the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and their Hudson Estuary Trees for Tribs program, we continue our restoration efforts so these sites can be visited for years to come!

Did you know the New York Knicks can trace their name back to a character created by Washington Irving?

In 1809, Irving published "A History of New York" under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker. The character became so popular that "Knickerbocker" became closely associated with New York and its Dutch heritage.

More than a century later, New York's NBA team adopted the name "Knickerbockers"—eventually shortened to the Knicks.

From literature to basketball, Irving's influence is still part of New York's identity. Not many authors leave behind a legacy that's still being chanted in an arena more than 200 years later.

Let's go Knicks! 🏀🧡💙

🍩 It's National Donut Day, so of course we have to share some donut-related history!

Long before donuts became a staple of bakeries and coffee shops, Washington Irving was writing about them. In "A History of New York by Diedrich Knickerbocker," he wrote:

"[I]t was always sure to boast of an enormous dish of balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog’s fat, and called dough-nuts, or oly koeks -- a delicious kind of cake."

At Washington Irving's Sunnyside, you can still step inside the dining room where Irving entertained his guests and imagine the legendary feasts that happened there.

Belinda and Will are back!

The years -- 150 of them! -- had begun to leave their mark on these cherished dolls, and they were in need of some conservation work.

After months of careful work by Textile Conservation Workshop, Belinda and Will have returned and can continue sharing their stories for years to come.

Here's some of the treatments that were done for Belinda:
-Hand-vacuumed using micro-attachments and low suction
-Broken fingers on both hands were tacked in place
-Left wrist was reattached to her arm
-Custom gloves were created from a lightweight sheer fabric

And for Will:
-Hand-vacuumed using micro-attachments and low suction
-Holes in his suit and sock were stabilized with patching fabric
-Openings along the outer seams of his breeches were sewn closed
-Pin-tucks were gently pressed open with a low heat tacking iron

Swipe for a behind-the-scenes look at the conservation process and to compare the before-and-after results.

We're thrilled to have them back. And as it turns out, they clean up pretty nice. 😊 Visit Washington Irving's Sunnyside this fall to see them on display.

The conservation of this work was supported through the NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Treatment Grant Program administered by Greater Hudson Heritage Network GHHN. This program is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. The Coby Foundation has provided additional dedicated support for textile conservation projects.

For the past four years, and I have partnered with Historical Hudson Valley () to curate and produce the Pinkster celebration at Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, New York. Every year has been special, but this year’s production was by far my favorite.

On May 23, despite the rain, we gathered to honor our ancestors and celebrate Pinkster—the oldest African American holiday in the United States. We sang our songs, danced our dances, painted our bodies, played our music, and lifted our spirits together.

Deep gratitude to everyone who joined us and shared their gifts. And endless love to those who came before us. We remember you. We honor you. We love you.
