🐾 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄: 𝐌𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐤 𝐁𝐨𝐲 — 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐅𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞

Some of you may remember Mamak Boy from our May fundraiser. Here’s how his story ends.

Mamak Boy is one of our managed TNVRM dogs — the neighbourhood alpha, known for getting into fights. He’d been neutered and released back to his community as part of our ongoing TNR work. Then one day, he was found unable to walk, badly injured, in a suspected hit-and-run. A resident moved him to a corridor, where he lay unable to move for 2-3 days.

This is where the “M” in TNVRM — Manage — comes in, and it’s the part that often gets overlooked. TNVRM isn’t a one-time job that ends at release. Managing means staying responsible for these dogs long after they’re back on the streets: watching over them, stepping in when they’re hurt, and making sure the ones we’ve already committed to don’t fall through the cracks. Because Mamak Boy was part of our managed programme, that responsibility fell to us.

This was the 2nd rescue mission of Mamak by F5. Volunteers April and Mr Wong trapped and rushed him to Animed for surgery. Still unable to stand afterward, he went to April’s home for rehabilitation — and the moment he arrived, he started walking again.

Weeks later, it was clear his old wound hadn’t fully healed and rain kept worsening it, so release wasn’t an option. April made the decision to adopt him, bringing him into her shelter for long-term care and giving him a fighting chance.

𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐭 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐢 𝐌𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐤𝐚! 🇲🇾🐾

This Merdeka, we want to talk about real, lasting change: 𝐓𝐍𝐕𝐑𝐌 (𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐩-𝐍𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫-𝐕𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞-𝐑𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧-𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞), the humane and proven approach to managing community dog populations in Malaysia.

Unlike culling, which only creates a temporary gap that new, unvaccinated dogs quickly move into, TNVRM actually breaks the cycle. Sterilized dogs mean no more puppies born into hardship. Vaccinated dogs mean protection against rabies for both animals and people. A stable, managed population means fewer conflicts and safer neighborhoods — and at the heart of it all is a simple idea: real compassion for every living being.

But TNVRM doesn’t happen in isolation. It takes a whole community working together — volunteers who trap and transport, feeders who check in on the dogs every day, veterinary partners who make sterilization and vaccination possible, city councils that support humane and sustainable solutions, and homeowners’ associations that choose coexistence over conflict. It also takes everyday people like you, whose awareness and support are what make these programs sustainable in the long run.

At its core, TNVRM isn’t just about managing dog populations — it’s about proving that humans and community dogs can share the same streets, parks, and neighborhoods peacefully, each looking out for the other.

𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 “𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄” 𝐈𝐒𝐍’𝐓 𝐒𝐀𝐅𝐄: 𝐀 𝐃𝐈𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐍𝐕𝐑𝐌 𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐈𝐎𝐍

Our TNVRM missions usually follow the same rhythm: Trap. Neuter. Vaccinate. Release. But this latest mission looked different — because the situation on the ground demanded it.

With the wave of poisoning cases we’ve been responding to in Balakong, it was just too dangerous to release these dogs back to the area. So instead, we had to make a different decision.

12 at-risk dogs were caught from a heavily poisoned area and moved to safety. We assisted with transport and neutering, and the dogs were relocated to a home where they could actually be safe — not sent back into a place actively killing community dogs.

TNVRM’s “R” stands for Release — and it’s primarily what we do during a mission. Returning dogs to their territory after sterilization is usually the right call; it’s how community dog populations stay stable and humane.

Relocation and rehoming is a last resort, not a solution. Adopters are not always available and long term boarding requires massive funds. If we can’t find them a home, we release them back once the area is safe again.

**𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫, 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞. 🐾🇲🇾**

Our recent meeting with 𝐏𝐉 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐫 and the 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐖𝐀 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 was another step toward a shared goal: making PJ a model for humane, sustainable stray management.

Through #𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐡 we’re uniting local authorities, NGOs, feeders, rescuers and residents to turn intention into coordinated action.

But lasting change needs 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 — systems and policies that make humane, evidence-based management consistent, not one-off. 𝐓𝐍𝐕𝐑𝐌 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 — it’s population management, education, community engagement and long-term commitment.

The people and willingness are already here in PJ. Now we build the system to match.

𝐅𝟓 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭

F5 – Filbert’s Foundation for Furry Friends is deeply concerned by the reported decision to charge Rocky’s owner alongside the man accused in connection with Rocky’s death.

If the reported facts are accurate, Rocky’s owner was not seeking to harm anyone—she was desperately trying to protect her dog and stop what she believed was happening to him. She pleaded for Rocky to be released as he was being restrained, and her actions must be understood in that context.

We believe justice must distinguish between protecting a vulnerable animal from harm and causing harm to that animal. These are not morally equivalent actions.

F5 respects due process and the ongoing investigations, but we urge the authorities to ensure that the pursuit of enforcement does not lose sight of compassion, proportionality and the protection of animal welfare.

Rocky deserved protection. His owner deserved to be heard. And justice must never punish those who try to prevent cruelty.

An update on Rocky’s case.

Muhammad Shah Hizam, the 24-year-old man involved in the operation that led to Rocky’s death, is set to appear before the Klang Sessions Court this Thursday, August 20, at 9am, where he will be charged. The exact charge has not yet been disclosed.

Our voices were heard — and that matters. But we also want to be honest about what that means: public pressure got this case in front of a judge. It didn’t decide anyone’s guilt. That’s not our job, and it’s not the internet’s job either.

There’s a lot of noise online right now, a lot of people certain they know exactly what happened. The truth is, we don’t have the full picture yet. What we do know is that this deserves to be settled properly — in a courtroom, with evidence, not in comment sections. So that’s where we’re putting our trust now.

We’ll be watching, and we’ll keep you posted as the case unfolds.

Meet Bruno. 🐕 He’s just 5 months old, and home right now is the roadside — where he and his 4 siblings shelter underneath a parked bus to stay safe.

Bruno is OKU — he lost one of his front paws, most likely from an accident or a trap. It’s a hard start to life, but the injury has healed well and he gets around just fine. He hasn’t let it slow him down — he just needs someone willing to see the sweet, resilient pup that he is.

We are doing our best to get Bruno and his 4 siblings off the streets and into safe homes, away from traffic, disease, and the everyday dangers of street life. 𝐁𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐞 — as our OKU puppy, he may need a little extra patience finding the right family, and time isn’t on his side.

Ini arahan rasmi kerajaan — anjing jalanan ditangkap, dan kalau tiada siapa ambil dalam 48 jam, anjing itu dibunuh. Nampak macam cara cepat nak selesaikan masalah. Tapi sebenarnya, ia tak selesaikan apa-apa.

𝐕𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐮𝐦 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭
Ini dipanggil “vacuum effect” — kesan kekosongan. Bila satu kawasan kehilangan anjing sebab ditangkap, tempat dan makanan yang kosong tu akan tarik anjing baru dari kawasan lain masuk. Anjing baru ni pun akan membiak, dan populasi kembali macam asal — atau lagi ramai — dalam masa beberapa bulan je. Duit, masa, dan nyawa yang dikorbankan semuanya sia-sia. Kitaran ni berulang, tak habis-habis.

𝐓𝐍𝐕𝐑𝐌 𝐏𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐬𝐤𝐚𝐧 𝐊𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐢
Tangkap, Mandul, Vaksin, Kembali, Urus

Anjing dimandulkan, divaksin, dan dihantar balik. Tiada tempat kosong, tiada anjing baru masuk membiak.

Kalau kawasan sekitar buat sama, populasi anjing akan turun sikit demi sikit — sebab tu TNVRM kena buat selalu, bukan sekali je.

𝐏𝐨𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐢 𝐓𝐚𝐤 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐤𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐥 = 𝐋𝐞𝐛𝐢𝐡 𝐑𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐢 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐬𝐚
Satu anjing betina yang tak dimandulkan boleh hasilkan puluhan anak dalam beberapa tahun. Anak-anak tu membesar kat jalanan — tiada pemilik, tiada perlindungan, tiada sesiapa nak bela. Mereka jadi sasaran senang untuk kekejaman, penganiayaan, dan pengabaian. Semakin ramai anjing macam ni kat luar, semakin tinggi risiko kes macam Rocky berulang.

𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞/𝐔𝐫𝐮𝐬 — 𝐁𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐘𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐥𝐮 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐮𝐩𝐚
Ramai orang ingat kerja TNVRM habis lepas anjing dimandulkan dan dihantar balik. Tak betul. Fasa “Manage” sebenarnya bahagian paling penting — pemantauan berterusan, hubungan dengan komuniti setempat, dan sistem amaran awal kalau ada anjing cedera, sakit, atau dalam bahaya.

TNVRM bukan sekadar kerja kebajikan haiwan — ia strategi kawalan populasi yang paling efektif untuk jangka panjang.
