We’re getting busier! The Swainson’s Hawk came from Las Cruces, the Great Horned Owls came from various places; the Lavender Farm in Tularosa, one from Ft Bliss, two from Lordsburg, with one still being treated for a broken wing at The El Paso Zoo, a Raven nestling that came from Silver City and Mo.

Here is an xray of the break in the wing of the Great Horned Owl nestling taken at the El Paso Zoo, that Dennis took there yesterday. Dr Vickie and her staff inserted a pin in the hollow marrow part of the bone. The pin will stay in and the bone will elongate over it as it grows. It will be down there for awhile, before it is transferred to us.

Here’s the story on our newest Great Horned Owl nestlings that arrived yesterday:
A man in Lordsburg was cutting down a large pine tree. He saw an old nest and knew it was empty but when he cut it down there was another nest he didn’t know about. One little one has a broken wing that will be taken to the El Paso Zoo this morning and the other is fine and will stay with us. At this point both of them are eating ok.

This little fluff ball, aka Hooty, aka Great Horned Owl nestling was found on a lavender farm in Tularosa at the bottom of a tree. The other nestling was found nearby but didn’t survive the fall, unfortunately.
Hilary Floren from KVIA, an ABC television station in El Paso is who found the owl and transported it to the veterinarians at the El Paso Zoo for initial evaluation and treatment. She then volunteered a few days later to bring it to our facility in Silver City. She interviewed us and filmed the facilities for a possible news story.
The nestling will be in our care until ready for release which be a few months. Thank you for your care and interest in this little one!
