Gila Wildlife Rescue

Gila Wildlife Rescue is a 501C3 non-profit organization that is licensed for ALL species of wildlife. We care for between 100-300 animals per year.

Our mission is to rehabilitate and release New Mexico wildlife and to educate the public about wildlife issues. Our charity supports the care of these animals by providing food, medication, supplies, maintenance of enclosures, transporting the animals for release. Dennis picked up this Great Horned Owl that was reported to us this morning from the south of Deming. Upon examination, the wings were ok, but he is severely emaciated. Hopefully the bird will make it. Thank you to the lady who called this morning and for her husband putting it in a box .

Mo’s release! Fly free and live long!!!

Mo’s journey was a long one with us. Brought to us by Brad and Erin Wood, who were scouting for Pronghorn in the Peloncillos Mountains in the southwest corner of New Mexico. They discovered this Great Horned Owl trapped in a vat of molasses and rescued him. They met Dennis and transferred a pitiful looking bird to him and he brought him to our facility.
After 3 washings, and damage to his feathers from the molasses, we feared he would be unreleasable. We decided to wait and see. Took a year for him to molt, but he finally did so he was ready to release. After inspection by Dr Allred, he was ready to go. These are a few of the pictures of his progress. The video of his release will follow this post.

Due to the recent outbreak of the New World screwworm in southern New Mexico, Gila Wildlife Rescue is now required to have birds inspected, by a qualified, veterinarian or inspector. This process is helping to contribute to stopping the spread of this infestation.
We have two Great Horned Owls that we raised and Mo. As you remember, Mo was rescue from a vat of molasses a year ago. His feathers finally were replaced after molting.
We took them to Dr Allred at Arenas Valley Veterinary Clinic for inspection and they passed with flying colors! After he signed the official forms for the documentation of inspection through the New Mexico Department of Wildlife, they were certified for release.
Thank you Dr Allred and New Mexico Department of Wildlife for your efforts in eradicating this nasty infestation in our state.

I’m sorry to say that the Long Eared Owl didn’t make it. Its injuries were just too extensive.

Picked up this beautiful and rare Long Eared Owl near Deming today. His shoulder is broken and the humerus bone broken and split lengthwise. Not sure but it looks as though it may have been shot. Doesn’t look good for this one.

Mo is starting to molt! We’re so excited. The photos of his wing shows new feather growth. It’s almost like every other feather has been replace so far. For those of you who don’t know who Mo is, refer to the post from August 9, 2025.

On a lighter note, Dennis filmed this Swainson’s Hawk doing what he does naturally. He is being released soon.

We’re sorry to say that in the last few days we have had 3 Great Horned Owls that were caught in barbed wire fences and an immature Swainson’s Hawk that was tangled in ribbon possibly from a helium balloon and was severely emaciated. They were all beyond help and had to be euthanized. This is the hard but necessary part of rehab. Thanks to all the rescuers for noticing their plights and helping them. The last Great Horned Owl from today was by far the worst and couldn’t get a picture of it.

A heartfelt thanks to all of you who participated in and observed the release of Hootie, the Great Horned Owl in Tularosa on August 2, at the Floren Lavender Farm.
