This week began with Mouse and James, two cats who went home together and became best friends. As the week comes to a close, we’re celebrating another pair who went home together yesterday: Balderdash and Beach Ball.

During our fee-waived adoption days, made possible by the ASPCA Rescue Effect, Andrew welcomed both kittens home. He wrote to tell us they were settling right in and already making life a little brighter.

That is the bond we have honored all week: the way pets change our days, our homes, and our lives.

Because of you, 65 tributes were shared online, our remembrance boards filled with names, photographs, and stories, and more than $22,000 was raised for cats at SAFe.

To everyone who remembered a beloved pet, gave in their honor, or welcomed someone new: thank you for showing us how much love this community can hold.

Welcome home, Balderdash and Beach Ball ❤️

Today is Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🌈. We are remembering the pets who changed our lives - and celebrating the community that showed up for them.

As of 10 a.m., this community has raised $20,383 for cats at SAFe, including the full $10,000 Mouse & James’s Match. Together, you carried The Pets Who Changed Us beyond its $20,000 goal - a beautiful tribute to two best friends who stayed side by side through everything.

You also created this.

More than 40 tributes have been shared online, with even more memories added here in our Adoption Center. Lily’s endless kisses and snuggles. Frankie’s sofa somersaults. Guppy’s sweet little chirp-meow and snaggletooth. Each name, photograph, and detail has made this board a place where deeply loved pets can be remembered together.

The board has not changed how much we miss them. It has changed how alone we feel in missing them.

Thank you to everyone who gave, shared a memory, visited the board, or simply made room for someone else’s grief. You have shown us what this community can hold.

If a special pet is on your mind today, there is still room for them. Share their name, photograph, or a little detail you never want to forget at https://tally.so/r/A7R60W (or visit the link in our bio)

Every kind of pet is welcome. No donation is needed to take part.

Content warning: pet loss

When our veterinarian heard a heart murmur, Ele-Ele entered foster care while we waited for answers.

She was wary at first, but within an hour, she was purring through the bars of her crate and playing with her toys. Over the next three weeks, she warmed up, greeted her foster caregiver, and purred loudly for chin scratches.

Her caregiver also noticed that Ele-Ele’s breathing stayed fast, even while she rested. Cardiology revealed a large congenital hole in her heart and congestive heart failure. Her condition could worsen suddenly and cause significant pain.

The kindest choice was also the hardest. We helped Ele-Ele pass peacefully before her disease progressed. She was pain-free and surrounded by people who loved her.

Her care mattered. Those three weeks were not simply spent waiting for answers - they were part of her life.

📌 Add someone special to our remembrance board - no donation needed:

Care like Ele-Ele’s begins with people paying attention. Together, gifts and Mouse & James’s Match have raised $14,030 toward our $20,000 goal. Every gift through August 28 is doubled dollar for dollar.

Meet the Tiger club! We’d call them a triple threat, but they’re more of a triple treat. They’ve been waiting 4 weeks for a home, but we have a feeling this will be their weekend.

🐯 Tiger Eye is the goofball of the group. He adores attention and will roll around to make sure you know how cute he is. He loves to plop down next to his siblings for cuddles – though he has a habit of swishing his tail in their faces when he prances around.

🌸Tiger Lily is the sibling sweetheart. More reserved than her brothers, this delicate flower prefers to hunker into a corner and observe. Listen closely, and you’ll hear her gentle purr. She’s a true tender soul.

🏔️Tiger Mountain is the athlete. He may look stoic – especially when Tiger Eye flops on top of him – but put a toy in front of him and he’s the first to pounce! Tiger Mountain is a terrific brother, always gentle with his sister and patient with his brother.

The Tigers can’t wait to meet you! You can add them to your family by visiting SAFe’s Adoption Center, open Thurs-Sun 12-6 PM.

Since Friday, our remembrance board has filled with names, faces, and the little details that made each pet unmistakably themselves.

There’s Sam’s kibble hockey. Mili insisting on freshly refreshed water. Loki picking berries straight from the bushes. Bandit’s long retirement walks and naps.

We began the board with cats our team cared for and said goodbye to at SAFe. Now, your pets are beside them.

The board is tender, but it is also full of life. It feels like a room full of very loved pets - and people who understand why their names still matter.

📌 There is still room for someone you love. Every kind of pet is welcome, and no donation is needed:

Together, you’ve already raised $6,123 with Mouse & James’s Match toward our $20,000 goal. Right now, every gift is doubled dollar for dollar until the $10,000 match is met.
