Oh no! We missed National Otter Day on May 28! But is it ever too late to appreciate these charming faces? Not when we have a quilt as terrific as Wendy Bannister's “St. Oswald and the Holy Otters” to share.
“The triptych is my tribute to the sea otters that love life and enjoy all the Pacific Northwest has to offer.”
Blue ribbon winner in the 2024 Quilters Anonymous quilt show in the Hand Quilting category. Full piece measures 60” x 32”
Hand and machine pieced. Hand appliquéd. Hand quilted. Original design.

“Every canvas is a journey all its own.”
— Helen Frankenthaler

These four quilts, created during a QA-hosted workshop with fabric artist Audrey Esarey, beautifully illustrate how quilters may begin with the same framework but their individual choices in color, composition, and technique transform every piece into something uniquely personal and special.

Sometimes good things take time.

Island Chain by Suzanne Weave
Suzanne started this quilt in 2021 but waited until 2024 (and a sewing machine upgrade) to complete the quilting. A Painterly Petals jelly roll was key to helping her achieve the 3-D effect .
Machine pieced. Machine quilted. 52” x 63”
Design credit: "Island Chain" from "The Big Book of Strip Quilts" by Kim Brackett.

If you attended the guild quilt show in March, you likely met "Rainbow Rambeau" by Carolyn Butterfield. It was one of the winners of the Challenge Quilt Category.
But did you meet Rambeau's pal, "Curly", also by Carolyn Butterfield? With his luxurious fleece that brought him into 3-D, Curly was a crowd (and kid) favorite.

Netflix is pretty excited about its new movie “Remarkably Bright Creatures” but here at QA, we were way ahead of them when it comes to octopus appreciation!

Octavia by Judy Irish.
70” x 45”
“The octopus seemed like such a great design idea for a quilt, thus Octavia was born! I had so much fun creating this underwater world where Octavia lives and using raw edge appliqué with charms and other materials sewn or glued on. Check out the rings on her tentacles!!"

Hand and machine appliquéd. Longarm machine quilted. Original design.
3rd Place, Art & Innovative category, 40th annual quilt show (2022)
