We'd like to extend an enormous thank you to everyone who came out to support last evening's Calcutta and Silent Auction at the Abbey Restaurant. There was an abundance of joy, laughter and generosity that exemplified a true sense of community.

We are grateful for our many sponsors, donors, volunteers and The Abbey Restaurant who all contributed to the success of this annual event.

Remember the framed Samplers on Grandma's parlor wall? Samplers were the test of a young girl's fitness for the role Society defined for women in the 18th and early 19th century. Needlework was an essential skill in an era when every stitch of clothing was made by hand. A girl's education focused entirely on the "domestic arts" and a well finished Sampler was a proud Diploma.

Michele Pagan, nationally noted textile conservator, has researched the roots of early American Samplers, as they emerged in the generation following the American Revolution. In her presentation at the Sheldon Historical Society Saturday, she'll share insights into the family dynamics, local history, and community values, shaped by the War for Independence. You're invited to bring your own Sampler examples for a thoughtful assessment of the piece by the leading expert in this important folk art form.
