Our first glean of the year at Shelburne Farms reminded us why we love gleaning!🌈🦋

A perfectly sunny day harvesting some gorgeous chard and lettuce surrounded by the beauty of Shelburne Farms - who could ask for more??🥬🌞

In addition to International Workers' Day, May Day is a celebration of the beginning of spring!🌼

Taking place around the midpoint between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, May 1st was historically a day to celebrate the incoming warm season and new sprouts!🌱

Today, we are taking time to bask in the spring sun and dream about this season's gleans.🌞

For a more traditional approach, try washing your face in the fresh dew or making a bouquet of wildflowers for your neighbors!💐

Happy Earth Week!🌱

As gleaners, we are so grateful for what the Earth provides us in so many ways, but especially for the delicious food we can grow!

How does gleaning help the Earth?

1. Reduces emissions from food waste
2. Conserves farming resources
3. Supports sustainable local food systems.

Plus, it feeds and strengthens our local community!

Anyone (you!) can become a gleaner today!

We completed our very first Chittenden County gleans today!✅

In collaboration with the Intervale, we harvested 🌟104 pounds🌟 of greenhouse spinach from Intervale Community Farm (pictured) and Head Over Fields, all of which will go to the Intervale's pop-up food distribution in Winooski. Thank you to these amazing farms!

It's a very exciting start to our new Chittenden County gleaning program in collaboration with Feeding Champlain Valley 🌈

Thank you so much to Hackett's Orchard for hosting us last week!

SHLT is partnering with Healthy Roots Collaborative and Grand Isle County Natural Resources Conservation District on Farm to School work across the county, including helping to organize farm field trips for students throughout the year.

We had a great time with the Folsom first graders last week for a pruning workshop at Hackett’s. We learned why farmers prune apple trees and what the farm looks like in the winter. We got to see the many tools they use to prune, and watch Devin prune a few trees while we were there. These students will visit again in the spring, and then as second graders in the fall to see the full cycle!

We are seeking artist's applications for our community mural project on our Sheldon warehouse!

Feeding Champlain Valley’s Healthy Roots Collaborative seeks an artist or design team to create and install an original mural that highlights Northwest Vermont’s agricultural heritage and strong community network. The mural will be prominently displayed along the Missisquoi & Lamoille Valley Rail Trail at the FCV/HRC Warehouse located at 101 Casino Rd. in Sheldon, Vermont.

This project aims to celebrate the deep interconnectedness of our local food system. It is a priority to honor farmers, farmworkers, our diverse farm partners, and the many neighbors who rely on—and contribute to—local agriculture. In addition to the exterior warehouse mural, the selected design will also be adapted for use on our gleaning truck and refrigerated trailer.

This project is open to all artists, age 18 and over and all artists new to the field are encouraged to apply. Please refer to official document for more information on budget, expectations and our selection process on our linktree. If you have further questions, please email Peter Jenkins at [email protected]
