On September 11, 2001, Brigadier General Ben T. Robinson was serving as the Commander of the 552nd Air Control Wing at Tinker Air Force Base. He held command of the Air Force’s fleet of E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) aircraft.

After the attacks began, Robinson’s wing was among the first units tasked by North American Aerospace Defense Command to defend U.S. airspace. Under his command, AWACS aircraft launched within hours and began continuous homeland-defense patrols as part of Operation Noble Eagle.

Robinson later described hearing the phrase “air war over America” for the first time that morning, noting that his wing was suddenly conducting combat air-defense operations over the United States from its home station.

One notable mission that day involved AWACS crews helping coordinate and protect the movements of President George W. Bush as he traveled from Florida to Louisiana, Nebraska, and back to Washington, D.C.

It was an honor to have him speak at the museum. We truly appreciate his dedication and service to our country.
