Somali Family Safety Task Force Somali Family Safety Task Force is a nonprofit community-based-organization located in the New Holly neighborhood in Seattle, WA. Since 9-11, U.S.

We serve refugee and immigrant women and their families by providing culturally appropriate programs, workshops and events. In 2005, Farhiya Mohamed was working full-time as the Somali Domestic Violence Advocate for Seattle’s Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA). Although she was passionate about the work was doing, she was troubled over the prevalence of domestic and gender-based violence that she saw in her own community and the lack of awareness and prevention. In addition, she noticed that the Somali women she personally knew and worked with faced extra barriers to getting help; including a fear of reporting abuse to law enforcement. government arrests and confiscations of assets of Somalis, among other immigrant groups, have made abused women wary of calling the police. Farhiya realized there was a specific need among Somali women – many of them refugees who had already experienced and fled violence – to address the underlying issues leading to GBV. So Farhiya along with SPS Family Liaison Mohamed Roble, ReWA, and the City of Tukwila formed the Somali Family Safety Project – a coalition to organize South King County’s Somali community to respond to this need. The Project’s workshops, attended by a total of nearly 300 hundred people, resulted in the formation of the Somali Family Safety Task Force (the Task Force) – a permanent community-based-and-operated organization. Since then, the Task Force has worked with women and girls in researching and addressing the underlying causes that contribute to GBV. In addition to violence prevention, the Task Force team realized early on the crucial role reducing isolation and promoting self-efficacy played in combating DV and GBV. In 2013-2014, we held a series of focus groups for 40 East African women and youth who live in NewHolly and the Rainier Valley area. The community requested four projects: a sewing project, a mothers’ support group, an inter generational communication workshop, and trainings to increase parental engagement in schools. Out of the mother’s support group arose even more suggestions and requests from our community that led to our youth and anti-violence programs and computer literacy courses. At the Somali Family Safety Task Force, we pride ourselves in developing programs requested by-and-for our community. As our history highlights, we are not only a community-based-organization but also a community-driven-organization. Today the Task Force serves hundreds of our Somali and East African neighbors in NewHolly and across South Seattle every year; providing valuable skills like financial literacy and voter education as well as youth outreach, mentorship, and community-building. We hope you join us as we continue our tradition of community mobilization by-and-for the community.

Rooted in hope, grateful for you. 💛

Our 11th Annual Gala, Rooted in Hope, Rising Together, was a night we won't forget. Thank you to everyone who joined us at NewHolly Gathering Hall for dinner, live entertainment, and stories that reminded us why this work matters.

A big thank you to our sponsors: Partner in Employment, Sound Transit, Sheng-Yen Lu Foundation, and Oceania NW. Your support helps us keep programs going for immigrant and refugee families in our community.

To our guests, volunteers, performers, and speakers, thank you for filling the room with so much hope. We couldn't do this without you.

Stay tuned, there's more ahead. 🌱

After school support can give students more opportunities to learn, grow, and build confidence. 📚

Research has found that quality afterschool programs can support students in areas such as academic performance, school engagement, and social and emotional development. Research on youth programs also highlights the importance of culturally responsive spaces where young people can feel a sense of belonging, see their identities and experiences valued, and build meaningful relationships with others.

For youth in our community, we believe both pieces matter.

That is why SFSTF is excited to begin our After School Program today.

Our program provides tutoring and academic support to help students strengthen their understanding of school subjects, complete homework, build study habits, and grow confidence in their learning.

But we also want students to have a space where they feel supported, welcomed, and connected to their community while they learn and grow.

One important thing for families to know:

Although our program runs Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 PM, students can participate up to 4 days per week. Families can choose the days that work best for their student’s needs and schedule.

Students can receive support through:

✓ In person sessions at NewHolly and Rainer Vista

✓ Online support through Zoom

✓ Up to 4 days of participation per week

Whether a student needs help staying on top of homework, extra practice with a subject, or simply a little more support and encouragement, our goal is to provide a welcoming space where students can learn, ask questions, build confidence, and feel connected.

🧵✨ **Celebrating Our Summer Youth Sewing Program Graduates!** 🎓

We are so proud to celebrate the graduation of our amazing youth from this year’s **Summer Youth Sewing Program**!

Throughout the summer, our young participants learned new sewing skills, explored their creativity, worked on their own projects, and built confidence along the way. It was wonderful to watch their ideas come to life, one stitch at a time.

A heartfelt thank you to our instructors, families, and everyone who supported and encouraged our youth throughout the program. Most importantly, congratulations to our graduates! We are incredibly proud of your hard work, creativity, and accomplishments. 💛

Keep learning, creating, and dreaming big! 🪡🧵✨
