Although the nights are getting cooler, the Seattle/King County area is still in a drought. The best time to water during a drought is early in the morning between 4:00 AM and 9:00 AM. Autumn is right around the corner. August is a great time to plan for yur next round of crops and also preperation for spring bulbs. The first light frost usually arrives around mid-November, now is the ideal time to plant cool-season crops like swish chard, spinach, kale, another harvest of radishes and lettuce. Its also the perfect time to drop spring bulbs, and divide overgrown perennials while the soil remains warm.

August is designated as Tree Check Month in Washington to check for wood-boring insects and high-priority invasive pests in your backyards and urban forests. When you're outside in your garden or on a walk, if you see or suspect an invasive insect you can report your findings to Washington Invasives mobile app or on the desktop website. Researchers are quick to respond to let you know what they're seeing from your photos and plan of action.

A few invasive pests of particular interest because of the damage they cause are: Longhorned beetles, Emerald Ash Borer, and Spotted Lanternfly.

Look to our wonderful local nurseries to find great plants to add to your garden for late summer and fall. Pollinators, especially honey bees who are still gleaning pollen late into the fall, depend on us to enhance our gardens with robust blooming fall flowers. The life in our gardens is so interesting and sometimes nothing to worry about when it looks like you have a problem. This erineum mite makes the most interesting patches on walnut leaves. They live inside their hand-crafted fuzzy enclosure and do minimal harm to the tree other than a little cosmetic change. Take a peek up close!

Talk with an educator about smart native plant choices, drought tolerant gardening, and managing pests and diseases. Pick up an educational brochure that helps you maintain a healthy lawn, veggie or ornamental garden, and learn about healthy soil choices.
