1301 Yushoku Winter

The stitchers are working on the kikko pattern.
In Japanese embroidery and textiles, the geometric kikko (turtle shell) pattern symbolizes longevity, good fortune, and protection. Based on interlocking hexagons mimicking a tortoise's shell, it reflects the Japanese folklore belief that turtles live for 10,000 years.

Phase 4 Four Seasons (simplified design)

In Japanese aesthetics, 照葉 (teriba or teri-momiji) refers to autumn leaves brilliantly glowing and reflecting the sunlight. It embodies the philosophical appreciation for mono no aware (the pathos of things) and mujō (impermanence), capturing a fleeting, radiant peak of life right before nature transitions into the quiet dormancy of winter.

The Aesthetic and Philosophical MeaningRadiance in Decay: Like the cherry blossom that falls at its peak, the bright red or yellow of a teriba leaf shows extreme beauty just as its life cycle ends.

Interplay of Light and Shadow: It highlights the transient brilliance of the autumn sun striking the leaves, contrasting sharply with the fading warmth of the year.

Connection to the Four Seasons: It acts as a poetic micro-marker of late autumn, reminding observers that constant cyclical change is the only true permanence in nature.

In Japanese kimono and textile design, the phoenix (Hō-ō) is considered one of the most prestigious kisshō-mon (auspicious motifs). When woven, painted, or embroidered onto garments, its symbolism translates into powerful wishes for marital bliss, high social standing, and lifelong good fortune.

Congratulations on completing the design!
The picture frame is reminiscent of a traditional Japanese roof.

Phase 4 Embroidery Sculpture

Using the combination of delicate embroidery techniques and thick metallic threads ( #8 and #10 silver and gold) on top of thick padding, we’ve challenged the dynamism of the three-dimensional expression.

The depth is shown by physically raising up the design as well as the effect of using the color and the embroidery technique. The combination of these two methods emphasizes the world of three dimensions.

Stitching Embroidery Sculpture focuses on how to manage corners using such thick metallics, and how to control koma so we can maintain the maximum shine on the metal.

While these pieces depict views of our motherland of Nuido, we are deeply moved by how the mountain remains unperturbed—accepting all things with serenity and strength. To those of us living in this world, such a heart holds a special radiance.

0310 Young Samurai
Young Samurai (Waka-musha) is a foundational piece that bridges technical discipline with rich cultural symbolism.

1. Symbolism in Design
The Young Samurai motif draws heavily on the tradition of Tango no Sekku (Boy’s Day / Children’s Day in Japan), celebrating growth, courage, health, and a bright future.

Kabuto (Helmet)

Symbolism: Protection, resilience, courage, and spiritual readiness to face life’s challenges.

Meaning: In Japanese culture, armor isn’t merely defensive gear; it represents a noble shield against adversity and evil spirits

The Concept of the “Young” Warrior (Waka-musha):

Symbolism: Unbound potential, vitality, and Shoshin (Beginner’s Mind).

Meaning: It highlights a journey of growth rather than static perfection—a spirit eager to learn, adapt, and refine itself.

Nuido translates to “The Way of Embroidery.” Much like Sado (Tea Ceremony), Kendo (Way of the Sword), or Bushido (Way of the Warrior), Nuido approaches embroidery as a lifelong path of self-cultivation rather than just a technical craft.
