The Sandown Historical Society is seeking the town's oldest resident,
Can you beat 95?

The Boston Post Cane is a long standing New England tradition, started as a publicity stunt in 1909 by the Boston Post Newspaper. The newspaper sent out gold tipped canes to 700 towns across New England, and roughly 500 of those towns still participate in the tradition– including our very own Sandown. The canes are traditionally presented to the oldest resident of the town, who then keeps it for life or until they move. It's a symbolic representation of civic pride and the historical legacy of New England towns.

For the last ten years Sandown’s cane (a reproduction) has been in the possession of Lloyd Lessard, who had been a pillar of the Sandown community throughout his life. Upon his passing this winter at the age of 104, it is now time for us to search for a new recipient of the Boston Post Cane.

So now, we are asking our community for information as we track down our oldest and wisest community member. We’ve identified a resident aged 95, do you know of anyone older?

Please contact the Sandown Historical Society with any information. We greatly appreciate it!

Love local history?
The Sandown Historical Society is looking for new members who want to help preserve Sandown’s story and share it with the community.
We’re a small, welcoming group of people who care about keeping our town’s history alive — and we’d love for you to join us! Whether you enjoy helping with events, caring for historical items, or spreading the word about what we do, there’s a spot for you here.
We meet at the Sandown Depot on the third Tuesday of every month, and our museum is open to the public every Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM.
Our next meeting is tomorrow — Tuesday, July 14th at 6:30 PM. Come say hi, learn more, and see if it’s something you’d enjoy!
We’re also looking for a new President and Vice President, so if you're interested in a bigger role, we’d love to chat.
Bring a friend and help us keep Sandown’s story alive — one chapter at a time!
