Big love to the Bright Research Group Senior Fellows. Seriously: hats off.

Watching y’all lead with rigor, heart, and lived experience is a reminder that the people closest to the problem are closest to the solutions.

This one is personal for me: I was once a BRG Fellow, and this time I had the honor of serving as a facilitator. Full-circle moments like this don’t happen by accident: they happen when communities invest in justice-impacted leaders and treat our knowledge like the expertise it is.

Community-led research isn’t a “nice to have.” It’s how we shift power. It’s how we build policy that actually reflects real life.

Who gets to be called an “expert” when it comes to incarceration: and why?

Proud of every single Fellow. Keep going. We’re building something bigger than a fellowship.

What does real leadership look like behind bars? At Unapologetically HERS, we know it starts with PARLP: a program built by and for justice-impacted people, pushing past the limits imposed by incarceration. PARLP isn’t just about preparing folks for jobs: it’s an investment in developing change-makers INSIDE prison walls, using peer-led research, critical skill-building, and direct resources like our $500 stipend.

I’ve lived this: when I was incarcerated, being trusted to do meaningful work and lead my peers changed my future. Now, as Exec. Director of UAHERS, I see community researchers step up and CREATE new pathways, not just follow old ones. Ready to rethink what equity and readiness mean?

PARLP proves that justice-impacted leaders don’t wait for permission: we build solutions. Listen to my episode to learn more: https://uahers.org/episode/workforce-from-within-how-parlp-prepares-incarcerated-leaders-for-meaningful-careers/

Sandra Johnson is living proof that second chances transform lives and communities. After surviving 20 years cycling through prison, Sandra used her lived experience to advocate: and win: real change for justice-impacted people across California. Her determination helped make the Fair Chance Act a reality, fighting job discrimination against people with records. Sandra now supports others as a Senior Advocate at Legal Aid at Work: and has just been granted a full pardon by Governor Newsom! Her journey is a fierce reminder: those closest to the problem must lead the solutions. At Unapologetically HERS, we're honored to uplift leaders like Sandra, fighting for true justice, equity, and healing.

What if healing looked like community, not confinement? As someone who's survived and witnessed the pain of medical neglect behind bars, I know firsthand that prison is not and can never be the solution to trauma. Violent systems only deepen harm: they can’t promote true healing. I’ve seen that real transformation happens through collective care and survivor wisdom, not isolation.

At Unapologetically HERS, I pour my energy into building abolitionist health justice: centering survivor leadership, peer support, and the brilliance of those most deeply impacted. Our work is living proof that community is where real change and healing are born.
