Small Steps For Change Our story began with one little girl, but today our sponsored students and homework clubs support over 50 children in one small colony in Baja California.

We empower children and families in Baja California through education, nutrition, and animal welfare programs, creating safe spaces to learn, grow, and build brighter futures while expanding access, equity, and community support. Our efforts are centered just 30 miles from downtown San Diego, CA. Our focus is education, but not just in the classroom. We know that academics combined with character development and community service raises up capable, ethical, and altruistic young people eager to help better their families and communities. Our educational programs also includes nutrition, growing your own food and animal education, specifically sterilization, neglect and abuse.

Life may look very different depending on where we are born and the circumstances in which we grow up, but joy, laughter, and love remind us that we have far more in common than what separates us.

Our teachers have the incredible privilege of witnessing these beautiful moments every day.

We began this work hoping to make a difference in the lives of these children. What we never imagined was how much they would enrich our own lives.

What a gift it is to do this work. ❤️

Our community library is small, and we still have shelves to fill. But seeing children settle in with a book reminds us why we started it.

Our Homework Club began as a way to support children who weren’t attending school. Today, our community center welcomes children whether they’re in school or out of school, and the library gives them a place to read, explore, and choose a book for themselves.

Thank you to everyone helping this space grow. One small step at a time. ❤️

This is what prevention looks like. 🐾

Animal suffering doesn’t begin when an animal is abandoned, hungry, sick or living on the streets. It begins much earlier and that’s where we believe our work needs to begin too.

Our upcoming spay/neuter clinic will provide free sterilization and vaccines, but equally important is the education that goes with it. We want families to understand how one decision today can prevent hundreds, even thousands, of animals from being born into communities already struggling with overpopulation.

This is why we believe so strongly in prevention. It’s sustainable. It gives communities the tools to become part of the solution, and over time, it reduces the need to continually respond to the same suffering.

We aren’t only helping the animals in front of us. We’re working to change how many will need help tomorrow.

That’s the kind of change Small Steps for Change was built for. ❤️

This is a little glimpse into who we are, the communities we work alongside, and the many people who make this work possible.

Education. Community. Health and wellness. Animal welfare. And most importantly, people helping people.

After a brief break, we are back in business and welcoming our kiddos back to our clubs and also back to school.

This week our students traded worksheets for a science experiment and created their own erupting volcanoes! 🧪🌋

At our Homework Clubs, education is about more than finishing assignments. We want our kids exploring, creating, asking questions and getting excited about learning.

Most importantly, we want them to know that this club is theirs too — a place where they are valued, encouraged and reminded that they are capable of so much. ❤️

Some of the most important work we do doesn’t always look like work.

Sometimes it looks like laughter, curiosity, messy experiments, and kids getting excited about discovering how the world works.

When we opened our homework clubs, we didn’t just want to help children complete assignments. We wanted to create a place where learning is fun, where curiosity is encouraged, and where children can dream a little bigger than they did yesterday.

This day was all about science, but the lesson was bigger than that. Every activity, every question, every moment of wonder is another small step toward building confidence, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.

We’re sticking to the plan, creating opportunities, inspiring curiosity, and investing in children one small step at a time.

Because education isn’t just about preparing kids for tests. It’s about preparing them for life. ❤️
