God is the one who initiates. The invitation to draw near always begins with God, not with us. Fellowship with God, prayer, worship, and relationship all flow from His gracious pursuit of His people. As Exodus 19 reminds us, God bore His people on eagle’s wings and brought them to Himself — and that has always been the destination.

The law exposes us. The gospel meets us. Jesus, the only truly free man who ever lived, became a slave so that we could be set free. As Galatians 5:1 reminds us, it is for freedom that Christ has set us free.

The law of God is not a ladder you climb to earn His favor. It is a gift He gives to those He has already rescued. Before God ever says “you shall,” He first says “I brought you out.” That order changes everything.

Exodus 20 opens not with demands but with grace. God delivered His people from slavery, and then He taught them what freedom actually looks like. The Ten Commandments are not the condition of belonging. They are the shape of it.
