🚨 URGENT CATS AT DEVORE ANIMAL SHELTER — AS OF SEPT. 4 🚨

⚠️ Devore had 10 cats on the urgent list this morning. The list has grown to 22 — 12 additional cats added in just one day.

💭 We hope there can be a more manageable approach so urgent lists remain effective rather than overwhelming the rescue and volunteer community. For cats with medical needs, we also hope foster placement and medical support can be considered when appropriate, instead of relying mainly on urgent placement.

Draco arrived at Devore on Aug. 31.
One day later, on Sept. 1, he was euthanized.

According to the shelter’s medical notes, Draco had neurological and vision-related problems. He was unsteady when walking and would sometimes fall over.

At the same time, Draco was documented as:
🐾 Bright, alert and responsive
🐾 Able to walk on all four legs
🐾 Breathing normally
🐾 Very vocal during his examination

The veterinarian considered several possible causes for his condition, but the underlying cause had not been determined. The record states “poor prognosis,” and euthanasia was elected.

⚠️ The information provided does not document further diagnostic testing to determine the cause, stabilization, additional observation, or an opportunity for rescue or specialty evaluation before euthanasia.

We understand that Draco was not a healthy kitten and that his condition was concerning.

But he had been at the shelter for only one day.

❓ Was euthanasia truly the only reasonable option at that point?

❓ Could additional evaluation, supportive care, observation, or more time have helped determine what was actually wrong with him?

We are sharing Draco’s documented story so the community can see the full picture and make their own judgment.

💔 THREE 1-DAY-OLD KITTENS EUTHANIZED AT DEVORE ON AUG. 31 — BEFORE THEY WERE GIVEN A CHANCE

All three newborn kittens arrived at Devore on Aug. 31 and were euthanized shortly after intake. Their records describe them as approximately 1 day old, with their umbilical cords still attached.

⚠️ For all three kittens, the records provided state essentially the same thing:
“Underweight, BCS 3/9. Humane euthanasia elected.”

No medical findings, stabilization, supportive care, or foster/rescue efforts are documented in the records provided.

No rescue plea was sent out for these kittens before they were euthanized.

❓ Why was BCS - a low body condition score treated as a basis for euthanasia instead of a reason for further medical assessment and supportive care?

❓ Why were these kittens euthanized before they were given any meaningful opportunity to reach a kennel, receive foster/rescue exposure, or have someone step forward for them?

⚠️ This is not the first time we have seen cats euthanized so quickly that they had little or no meaningful opportunity for rescue.

📢 We are asking San Bernardino County to review this practice. Newborn kittens are fragile — but euthanasia should not happen simply because an animal is "underweighted" or has a low BCS.

Before euthanasia, there should be an individualized medical assessment, reasonable supportive care, and meaningful foster/rescue outreach .

💔 They deserved a chance before an irreversible decision was made.

Twirl is a tiny 4-week-old female kitten at Devore. She has been temp fostered by shelter staff, but according to the shelter, she now urgently needs rescue placement.

🍼 Twirl is eating KMR/kitten-food gruel on her own with a great appetite, has lots of energy, and is using the litter box well.

She currently has some soft stool and has been started on a probiotic.

⏰ Deadline: 48-hour rescue deadline — please act urgently

Alfie is a 12-week-old female black-and-white kitten at Devore who has been placed Rescue Only.

According to the shelter, Alfie was returned by her adopter on Aug. 27 after several weeks of ongoing constipation despite medication and a special diet.

The shelter’s notes describe a swollen and irritated re**um, firm stool in her abdomen, and crying and straining when trying to defecate. She was also sent to a third-party veterinarian for overnight evaluation.

⚕️ Alfie needs continued medical care and a rescue able to help her get the treatment she needs.

⏰ Rescue commitment + pickup needed by closing on Aug. 26

Jenkins is an approximately 8-month-old male gray Domestic Shorthair at Devore.

According to the shelter, Jenkins has been designated Rescue Only due to severe dental disease affecting his appetite, and prompt dental care is needed.

The shelter’s medical notes describe juvenile-onset periodontitis, severe gingivitis, heavy dental tartar, weight loss, and poor appetite.

His panleuk test was negative.

He was also documented as bright, alert, responsive, friendly, and easy to examine.
