St. Augustine South Improvement Association

St. Augustine South Improvement Association A community organization committed to improving the quality of life for residents of St. Augustine South.

The SASIA Clubhouse – our St Augustine South community center – at 709 Royal Rd., is set in our one-acre park. St Johns County Parks and Recreation owns a further 1.34 acres adjacent to the east side of the SASIA property, that extends from Martin Rd at the north end down behind the homes on the 800 block of Royal Rd., to Tanager Rd. The combined properties provide a good recreation area for our c

ommunity, with a Tot Lot, picnic shelter, playing fields, shade garden, and parking lot. The clubhouse was built with voluntary effort, sponsorship, and donations of materials and community volunteer time, as well as cash donations, in 1963. It provides nearly 2300 ft of hall with a well-equipped kitchen. As well as being home to SASIA Board meetings on the first Wednesday of the month, and SASIA General meetings – open to anyone to attend – on the third Wednesday of each month, the clubhouse hosts many SASIA community events.

SASIA Community Meeting
Wednesday, June 17th at 7:00 PM
Discovering 4-H with Courtney Toelle

We are thrilled to welcome Courtney Toelle to the SASIA Clubhouse to share the incredible opportunities available to our neighborhood youth through the St. Johns County 4-H program.

As the 4-H Youth Development Extension Agent for the local UF/IFAS Extension, Courtney works directly with our community to manage and expand these vital youth programs. During her presentation, she’ll provide an overview of what 4-H looks like locally and how families in St. Augustine South can get involved.
While 4-H has deep roots in agriculture, Courtney will describe that today’s programs cover a massive variety of interests designed to help youth develop practical life skills, confidence, and civic responsibility. In St. Johns County, members learn by doing through a wide range of hands-on projects.

This will be the last meeting before summer; there are no meetings in July and August. The next Community Meeting will be September 16th.

Wednesday, May 20th
7:00pm, 709 Royal Road
We are thrilled to welcome acclaimed science journalist and nonfiction author Jennie Erin Smith as our guest speaker for Wednesday May 20th meeting at 7pm at the SASIA clubhouse located at 709 Royal Road. Jennie is a senior biomedicine reporter for Science Magazine’s. A recipient of the Waldo Proffitt Award for Excellence in Environmental Journalism right here in Florida, her reporting also frequently appears in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The New Yorker.

She will be discussing her compelling 2025 book, Valley of Forgetting: Alzheimer’s Families and the Search for a Cure, which was named a Top 10 Book of 2025 by The Wall Street Journal and a Best Book of 2025 by The New Yorker.

The book explores a rural community in the mountains of Colombia where families carry a unique genetic mutation causing early-onset Alzheimer’s beginning in their 40s. Jennie spent seven years living alongside these families and the medical researchers—including neurologist Dr. Francisco Lopera—who have been testing experimental drugs and working tirelessly to understand how the disease develops. Her deeply personal and meticulously researched work provides a vivid window into the sacrifices made in the search for a cure.

Please join us for what promises to be a fascinating, insightful, and thought-provoking evening.
