SASIA Monthly Meeting Tonight at 7:00 PM, at the SASIA Clubhouse located at 709 Royal Rd, 32086 in St Augustine South.

We have a special guest presentation by St johns County Administrator Joy Andrews, who will join us for a 30-minute discussion and presentation regarding the county budgets and the potential impacts of Prop 3. Invited by SASIA President Justin Miller, she will speak directly to our St. Augustine South community and answer your questions.

We will also hold nominations for the upcoming board elections taking place next SASIA General Meeting on November 18th. The board has prepared an initial slate of nominees for discussion.

Eligible SASIA members in good standing are welcome to nominate themselves or others. Due to recent board turnover, the majority of current positions are finishing out the remainder of the year, though many current executive board members are are being nominated to serve the upcoming terms, dependent on the election outcome.

Fall Festival Volunteers - We are actively seeking volunteers to help make our upcoming annual Fall Festival a success. If you are interested in lending a hand, let us know.

We’re starting to see the arrival of Painted Buntings (Passerina ciris) in St Augustine South. The video shows an adult male displaying that beautiful blue, green, and red plumage. Females are dull green. The eastern population of this species migrates south from coastal breeding grounds along the southern Atlantic coast. We host them in the St Augustine South neighborhood from Fall until Spring, although range maps say they are here year round.

These birds naturally favor woodland edges and dense scrub. Attracting painted buntings to your yard requires providing proper cover in terms of dense bushes or small trees where they can hide out and feel safe, and providing good like white millet. Plant dense native shrubs like wax myrtle or firebush to create the protective thickets they seek. Place these feeders within a few feet of your shrubbery so the buntings feel secure stepping into the open to eat.

The Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charithonia) is one of the most tropical looking butterfly species in St. Augustine South. To attract them to your garden, provide a variety of nectar plants (UF has great online lists of native and non-native options), and more importantly, host plants for their caterpillars.

They lay their eggs on passionflowers (Passiflora species), and here is a use trick to entice them to your garden, plant some native Corkystem Passionflower (Passiflora suberosa) in the shade. Propagate it via cuttings, air layers, or seed, and plant more! They go crazy for it. Unless there is a freeze or the county hits up our neighborhood for mosquito spraying, you can spot them here year-round.

This photo was taken right here in St Augustine South where this garden often has dozens of zebra long wings in it at a time. Perhaps we need to get working on having the clubhouse attract them as well. :)

We noticed the portable restroom at Royal Road Park was missing last night. After a few calls the St Johns County Parks dept told us another one will be out in its place today or tomorrow. There was a lapse in the contract between the old company that serviced it and the new one.

This is something that we had three SASIA members spend considerable time several years ago getting the St. Johns County Parks and Recreation to provide, after not having a restroom there for decades (and extra thank you to Carol Gangi, Margo Geer, and Kenneth Rainer for making it happen). So we are extra thankful it’ll continue to be there. The park is on a county right of way, but the portable restroom is placed on SASIA property via an agreement reached previously.

Just in case parents to the park are wondering where it went, don’t worry, it’ll be back.

Come hungry and enjoy some delicious food, meet your neighbors, and support a local business and a neighborhood event. P.S. Ask about the secret menu item...Tacos!!!

Shore Drive Cleanup
Saturday, September 5th
9:00am - 12:00 p.m., or whatever you can spare
Help keep St. Augustine South beautiful and clean. We start at 9am and pick up for a bit then meet back at the clubhouse. Wear close-toed shoes - pickers, gloves, and trash bags are provided. This is a wonderful way for students to earn community service hours. Meet at the clubhouse at 9am. 709 Royal Road, 32086
