The UF Health St. Johns Mobile Outreach Clinic will be at Patriot Place, 79 Masters Drive, on Wednesday, September 2nd, starting at 11:00 a.m.

The clinic provides primary care and health services for adults, including chronic disease management and education, diagnostic testing, wound care, and cancer screenings. Brooks Rehabilitation also provides support.

The Mobile Outreach Clinic works to "improve health outcomes and quality of life for people in vulnerable populations by providing clinical care and connections to resources that help advance the physical, social, and economic health of the communities we serve.”

America’s housing shortage didn’t happen overnight, and it won’t be solved by focusing only on today’s interest rates, inflation, or rising construction costs.

In St. Johns County, affordable housing matters more than ever.

This article traces the roots of the current housing crisis back to the 2008 financial collapse, when housing construction plummeted and never fully recovered. Today, the nation is estimated to be short millions of homes, while the shortage of rentals affordable to the lowest-income households is even greater.

It’s an important reminder that housing affordability is also about supply, preservation, and sustained investment. Communities need enough homes, but they also need homes that people across a range of incomes can actually afford.

A carbon monoxide detector may have prevented a tragedy today.

At about 1:30 p.m., one of our neighbors stopped by the St. Johns Housing Partnership office because an alarm was going off in his home, and he couldn’t figure out why. Travis from our team went with him to take a look.

When Travis entered the home, he found three people cooking with electric griddles and fryers in the living room. He immediately developed a headache and burning in his throat. Then he checked the alarm.

It was a carbon monoxide detector, and it was reading 47 parts per million.

Travis had everyone turn off the cooking appliances, open the doors, and leave the house. As the home aired out, the carbon monoxide level steadily dropped from 47 ppm to 32, then 17, and finally zero.

Everyone was safe.

It’s an important reminder that carbon monoxide can be a danger even in a home without a garage or gas appliances. In this case, cooking indoors without adequate ventilation created a potentially dangerous situation, and the people inside had been exposed long enough that they didn’t recognize what was happening.

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. You may not know it’s there without a working detector.

If you don’t have carbon monoxide detectors in your home, consider adding them. If you already have them, make sure they’re working properly. Today, one small alarm made a very big difference.

Ninety-two new affordable homes are now available in St. Johns County.

Ability Housing has completed the Village of New Augustine, a 92-unit apartment community in West Augustine for individuals and families earning up to 60% of the area median income.

What does 60% of AMI mean? Using the current HUD income limits, that’s up to $43,080 a year for one person, $49,200 for a two-person household and $61,500 for a family of four.

That context matters. Many of our neighbors live on incomes well below those limits, making the search for safe, affordable housing even more challenging, if not impossible.

The Village of New Augustine is a significant addition to our community and 92 more homes for people who need housing within reach of their incomes. It’s important progress, even as the need for affordable housing across a wide range of income levels continues to grow.

Some of the best ideas in affordable housing come from learning what’s working in other communities and sharing what we’ve learned in our own.

St. Johns Housing Partnership Executive Director Bill Lazar will be in Orlando next week for the Florida Housing Coalition’s 39th Annual Affordable Housing Conference, where he’ll connect with housing professionals from across the state and participate in two panel discussions.

On Monday morning, Bill will join Community Action agencies for a discussion on leveraging weatherization services. That afternoon, he’ll join the Housing Assistance Council and other USDA property owners to discuss rural housing.

He’s looking forward to exchanging ideas, learning from his peers and bringing new resources and connections home to strengthen our work in St. Johns County.
