Since 1963 the Foundation has rescued unwanted, neglected, and abandoned dogs & cats in Kankakee County

While our staff works 7 days a week, we are open to the public on Saturday afternoons from 12 to 3 and by appointment Tuesday through Saturday. If you are looking to drop off a donation we are open to the public Saturday between 12 and 3 or you can leave the donation by the front door between 7 and 5 any day of the week. Sunday- Closed

Meet Ozzie!

Ozzie is a one year old, spayed female pittie mix who came to us after being transferred from a high risk animal control facility down south, with her sister Oona. Oona was adopted back in May and now it’s sweet Ozzie’s turn to find her family!

Ozzie travels in the car well, is medium size and will require another dog in Her future home to help build her confidence.

Ozzie is dog friendly, cat friendly and all people friendly, although she is nervous, she is a kind, sweet dog. She will require someone with patience and calmness that lets her slowly open up!

Meet Larry!

Larry is a one year old neutered male who is back with us searching for a family of his own.

Larry came to us for the first time in September of 2025, had cherry eye surgery and was adopted the beginning of this year but is back with us and in search of a very specific home.

Larry is dog and cat friendly, however his future home with need to be willing to work with his quirks. Larry is a smaller fella that does not enjoy when people come and go from his home and will need to definitely be a put up in a crate or safe space kinda guy in his next home. He would be happiest in a low key environment that doesn’t have many visitors or constant change with a small circle of the people he calls family. While he doesn’t mind an adventure with his people, he definitely is not interested in hanging with strangers.

If entertaining guests is not really your thing or you’d prefer a night in over a night out, Larry might be the dog for you!

Doria has been adopted by the Booi family!

The Booi family applied with an open mind of who they would add to their family. We LOVE when applicants know they are ready to add to their family and just waiting to meet the right pup to come through our shelter. Doria and her 3 other siblings entered the shelter system due to no fault of their own and lucky Doria was the chosen gal to head off to happiness!

Meet Mia (and kennel assistant Stevey)

Mia is a 6 year old, female, small brindle pittie mix and while as staff we love all of our dogs, some just stand out just a little bit extra! Mia has been with us since 2022. Stevey has worked with Mia quite a bit and ensures she has everything she needs while at KCHF, but this pretty girl needs out of the shelter and into a family of her very own .

She was originally adopted from KCHF as a puppy, but was unfortunately returned after a fairly serious scuffle with another dog in the home, thankfully neither dog was significantly injured. Recently Mia went on a walk with one of our wonderful staff members and another dog and it went so well! While she might not be able to live with another dog, she’d be perfectly happy sharing walks with other low key friends!

Mia is a little bit of a nervous dog when she meets people for the first time- but once she knows you, she will show you how big her heart is and how sweet she is! Mia walks perfectly on a leash, rides amazingly in the car. Mia love to play with all kinds of toys, curl up in the lap of her person for a nap, and go for walks to sniff all of the things!

Poppy, Moxie,Smidge and Suki update!

It’s been just about 4 weeks since these sick little pups were dropped off during our Saturday open hours and look at the difference of these friends! Their foster has really been keeping up on their needs and we are happy to report we are starting to accept applications for these girls!

Poppy is the closest to being ready for a home of her very own with the others likely not far behind. There are some individual photos of Poppy at the end with her name on them. They have a vet appointment next week, with the biggest concern being the future for Suki’s eye. While they all have improved so much in such a short window, we want to ensure we are still moving in the right direction!

It’s because of the generous donations we received that have ensured they get the care they need with the best possible outcome of a healthy long life! These girls are just about 11 weeks old and are now acting more and more like normal pups each and every day. They love people, toys and of course food.

These gals won’t be active on our website until after their vet appointment, but if you’re ready to show these gals nothing but love and kindness, Apply to adopt one and be ready to welcome them home as soon as they get the final all clear!

Saturdays are the best way to meet your new best friend!

Stop by Razzle Dazzle Doggie Bow-tique from 11-2 to meet a couple of our adoptable dogs and celebrate Razzle Dazzles 21st anniversary pawty! Razzle Dazzle is a pet food store that offers great options for your dogs and cats. Razzle also helps us finds a solution with a few dogs in our care who have allergies! This young man is small (about 30lbs), neutered, vaccinated and spent the last 6 weeks in a foster home! He keeps his kennel clean, lives for toys, walks and ball. Buddy would be happiest in a fairly active home with anyone that can provide him pets and tell him how cute he is! Buddy is back with us at the shelter and can’t wait for you to stop by to say hello!
