Cal4Wheel Update: Oceano Dunes SVRA Reopens to Vehicle Recreation and Camping

The California Association of 4 Wheel Drive Clubs (Cal4Wheel) is pleased to share that California State Parks has announced the reopening of vehicle day use and camping south of Arroyo Grande Creek at Oceano Dunes SVRA, effective Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

Oceano Dunes remains one of California’s most iconic OHV recreation areas, and this reopening is welcome news for the off-road community. Cal4Wheel encourages all visitors to recreate responsibly and help protect continued public access to this unique destination.

State Parks officials are advising visitors to use extra caution while traveling throughout the dunes. Recent wind activity has significantly changed dune conditions and terrain features. Steep slip faces, sudden drop-offs, soft sand, and other hazards may exist in areas that were previously familiar. Visitors are encouraged to scout unfamiliar routes before proceeding and always operate vehicles responsibly.

As shorebird nesting season is currently underway, Cal4Wheel reminds all recreationists to respect fenced and posted closure areas, obey the 15 mph shoreline speed limit, and give wildlife the right-of-way at all times. Responsible recreation and stewardship are essential to preserving continued OHV access at Oceano Dunes.

Cal4Wheel appreciates the efforts of California State Parks to safely reopen the area and thanks the off-road community for its patience and cooperation during the temporary closure.

We've had a great VICTORY! BLM rescinded the Public Lands Rule on May 12. This puts an end to the "conservation lease" scheme that would have sold public lands to the highest bidder. However... rescission of this Rule is only a temporary fix - a permanent solution is required by passage of the WEST Act. Join us to urge Congress and the Senate to pass the WEST Act!
