Starting July 27th, our staff will be out of office for the sixth annual educator retreat!

Over the course of the retreat, teachers will build knowledge, network, develop implementable projects/curriculum, be treated to farm fresh meals, and stay in The Ecology School’s dormitory.

We are so excited to host our signature educator event for another year, and can't wait to show the incredible work our attendees and staff get up to next week.

It's difficult to find reliable sources that everyone trusts on climate change, but it seems there is one group people trust: healthcare professionals.

According to the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, 60% of Americans trust first responders and primary care doctors are sources about the health harms of climate change.

Today, we are spotlighting a great resource to track global warming across the globe!

The Reuter's Climate Monitor is a free to use dashboard by the news outlet examining how today's temperatures compare to historic averages.

You can search by locations or scrolling the interactive globe on the page.

There is also great data on where warming is happening, at what rate, and how extreme it is.

Mary teaches at San Domenico in Marin County, California, where wildfire is part of life, not an abstract concept.

Her six week Fire Ecology unit challenged 90 students to understand fire as more than a threat. Fire has shaped California's landscape and cultures for thousands of years, and her students explored that full story, from chaparral plants built to survive burns to the cultural burning practices of Indigenous communities.

They also got their hands on real data. Students analyzed 20 years of fire history in their county and ran risk assessments on campus and in their own neighborhoods.

The final posters tell you everything about how invested they were: "Burned to Blooming." "Keeping Sleepy Hollow Fire Safe." "Next Gen. of Fire Ecologists." The strongest projects were shared with the whole school community on a day of service.

We are so proud to be launching our brand new Plastics Pollution Learning Lab, co-created with Dr. Jenni Brandon, a biological oceanographer and microplastics scientist who has been researching this issue since 2012.

When Dr. Brandon started, microplastics were seen as an ocean pollution problem. Now they have been found in our food, our drinking water, and in multiple parts of the human body. This is no longer just an ecology issue. It is a human health issue — and exactly the kind of complex, urgent, intersectional topic that TCI educators are excited to bring into their classrooms and that students are passionate about.

The Plastics Pollution Learning Lab walks students through the science, the data, and the three lenses that highlight equity, community connection, and action. Six lessons, adaptable to your time and your students, ending with a community action project. Dr. Brandon helped build it because she believes the next generation will be the ones to solve this. We do too.

We're kicking off Plastic Free July with news we're excited to share: Plaine Products has signed on as a sponsor of our Changemakers Evening for Action on July 28th in S**o, Maine (see below to join us).

If you haven't heard of them, Plaine Products makes shampoo, conditioner, and body wash in refillable aluminum bottles, built around a simple idea: clean products shouldn't come with a side of plastic waste. They're a certified B Corp, a fellow member of 1% for the Planet, and they've kept over 800,000 plastic bottles out of landfills and oceans through their refill system.
