TIER: HAY GUYS!! 10-4-2026 HAY FUND UPDATE – Please Share.

THANK YOU Dory M, Suzanne & Chuck; Suzanne M, Sue L, Wendy W, Laura T, Ann W, Melissa C, Shirley & JR M, Michele & Paul B, Wendy W, Melissa S, Melanie S, for your generous contributions to the TIER HAY FUND. We are much closer to our goal!!

I had contacted our hay supplier to see what prices might be in a week on our normal order for a load of hay. The crazy prices of diesel fuel had me worried.

UGH!!! Fortunately, he already had trailers loaded and ready to go that he could sell us before the price increase. The thing was that there were only 7 stacks of alfalfa ($16.75 per bale, 64 bales per stack), but he would include 1 stack of Teff ($25 per bale). Total = $8032.00. Price includes delivery & stacking. This load should last us until the first of the year.

With monthly bills due, Board for CASE & GUS, Electric, Internet & Phone, Senior Feed & Hay Pellets, Supplements, Medications, etc. we just don’t have the funds right now. He agreed to deliver the leafy, fine stem and soft hay for all these old horses.

PAYMENT IN FULL DUE MONDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2026. Can you help?

As of 10/4/2026
Hay Cost $8,032.00
Hay Funds On Hand ($2,075.00)
Total Raised ($3,076.58)
Total Needed $2,880.42

9-19-2026 CASE UPDATE

CASE is doing well! He had his feet done again and only once tried to knock the farrier down. Personality plus. For a couple days he started dunking his hay. On one of those days he put the whole hay feeder into his water trough. Made more work for Angela and he was absolutely unapologetic!

We received the lab results & Bilirubin lab results ($200). The lab results ($200) showed no sign of infection (Yay!), but there was a light rise in his liver values. We had to wait a bit for the Bilirubin results as that test went to an outside lab. The results are suggestive of decreased liver function, but do not indicate the nature of the abnormality or whether the problem is reversible or permanent.

There is NO sign of infection!!! WOOT! WOOT!

When you compare the recent labs to his previous labs, consider that he suffered with a huge worm load and chronic long term starvation, and it has only been almost 5 months since he was rescued, the results are favorable.

CASE’s Oklahoma vet and our California vet (after reviewing labs) both agree that he is doing well. Especially his Oklahoma vet who has seen him since his arrival at QT. At this point he will finish the supplements he has been on (Livatrope & Platinum Performance) and then just be given his usual hay and and gobs of senior feed.

If he goes off his feed, becomes lethargic, etc. we will have the vet out. We will not be transporting him to California until we are sure that he is physically stable enough to make the trip. The heat in Oklahoma and the route he would take to California is brutal and we will not subject him to that. A long, tiring trip (3 days) for a horse of his age and recovering from starvation, liver issues, etc. could cause him to dramatically decline again which would mean rehabbing once more. I’m not sure he has another physical recovery in him.

He has been really good with his new flymask. Only removing it once! He still hollers at Angela and anyone that walks past to let them know he is starving even though he has feed in front of him at all times. He always says hello to Angela and also goodbye. (see video)

CASE’s board is due in a few days. With the recent vet bills for sweet Baylie’s euthanasia, etc., hay pellets/equine senior for our oldies and the outrageous electric costs, funds are tight. We also need to order hay.

Baylie has traveled on. 4/13/2013 to 9/4/2026, 13 years 4 months & 2 days.

Baylie's full story on his page: http://www.tierrescue.org/horses/baylie/

For the last few years, we have been battling Baylie’s Cushings Disease. Winter time he would get the heavy, heavy coat and look like a yak! We bought special heavy duty clippers to combat that buffalo coat. Eventually, after running blood tests/metabolic panels, he was put on a Cushings compound prescribed by our vet. Twice a year the blood work was run again to see if the prescription needed to be tweaked a bit. It helped tremendously. No more huge barrel tummy, no more thick coat.

Baylie had hoof issues from the beginning. It was found out via xrays that the tip of the coffin in one of his front hooves was broken and had healed improperly. Hoof trims on a regular basis kept him fairly sound unless he went too long in between trims. He would then begin to limp. Once his feet were trimmed he would be fine.

For the last 10 years his best friend was Scooter. They are almost 30 years old and had the same energy and feed requirements so they lived together. Once Baylie was put on the Cushings compound his dietary needs changed and he was moved into the 48 x 48 Barn stall. He enjoyed the barn setup but I could tell that he missed Scooter. Scooter also missed him.

Baylie eventually developed laminitis. Our farrier did an excellent job of helping him out and he did well for a time. The laminitis episodes began to increase and lasted longer than previously.

9/4/2026 Baylie was down in his corral and could not/would not get up. The vet was called out and Banamine/Dexamethasone was administered. After a bit of time, Baylie got up by himself! You could tell he was in quite a bit of pain. We waited for a little while to see if he could work it out. To me, it was obvious that this was his worst episode yet. The vet said we could continue with pain meds, etc. I just could not imagine Baylie having to go through this much on a regular basis. He deserved to be pain free and at peace. I made the decision to let him go.

Baylie was one of the sweetest horses we have had the pleasure of knowing. He has a seat in my heart... forever. 4/13/2013 to 9/4/2026, 13 years 4 months & 2 days
Vet bills, etc. for Baylie put a serious crunch on our funds. Contributions are very much needed and VERY MUCH appreciated. We are grateful for your support!!

8-22-2026 CASE Update

CASE: He is still yelling at Angela to feed him or pay attention to him every time she is outside. Although she explains it is not always feeding time, he continues to call & talk to her trying to convince her he is still starving. Of course, she reassures him, but he is unwavering in his vocalizations.

He has leveled off in his weight gain for now. This may be due to the crazy heat they are getting out there. He still finishes all his feed, but it takes him forever. He is a slow eater, will leave some and then go back for more during the day. Along with his hay and pelleted feed, he has 24/7 access to what remains of the pasture grass.

This recent picture shows no loss of weight, but he appears to have been in a fight with someone! When I first saw it, it looked like he had a black eye. After I asked Angela about it, she laughed and said it was from the roll-on fly repellent she has been applying. The flies weren’t too bad until recently (same thing here. With the heat comes the flies!). We ordered 2 flymasks to be sent and they should arrive soon. Hopefully it will make things a bit easier for Angela’s daily application of fly repellent.

This is the first month that CASE hasn’t had any bills! Woot! Woot! Soon we will have another metabolic blood panel done to see where his liver values are now. He is still being given Platinum Performance and the Livatrope liver supplement. His monthly board/care is due on the 24th.

Most of our rehab cases take about 3-4 months to get back to “normal/acceptable” weight / health and are often pretty much “out of the woods” at this point barring health issues-laminitis, colic, injury, etc. Of course, there are always exceptions. This is usually the period that is most costly due to vet, farrier, dental, transport etc. costs. With CASE’s initial liver issues, etc. I wasn’t sure that he’d be doing this well at 4 months after we reached out to help him thanks to YOU!!
