If you live in Effingham County and you're registered to vote, I've got something for you.
We have 10,000 petitions printed and ready to sign. It's called a home rule petition. Camden County used it to stop a spaceport their commissioners had already approved. McIntosh County used it in January to throw out a zoning ordinance. It's what Georgia gives regular people when their elected leaders go rogue.
Here's what it does. If enough of us sign, the Probate Judge has to put one question on a ballot, and the whole county votes on it: undo the December change that made data centers permitted by right, and prohibit them in unincorporated Effingham. Not the board's decision. Ours.
The county says 54,604 registered voters. Ten percent is 5,461. That's the legal number. But signatures get thrown out — wrong address, signed twice, not registered — so we need well past it. We printed 10,000 for two reasons: to make sure we clear the bar with room to spare, and to hand the county a stack they can't ignore. Five and a half thousand gets us a vote. Ten thousand tells them what the vote's going to say.
I'll be honest with you. I'm not against data centers as much as I'm against how this one was done — no hearing, no notice, the public told nine months after the first briefing. This is the one tool that can undo that. And I didn't come up with it, I'm just helping push it.
I keep hearing "Effingham doesn't care, they don't show up." How do we feel about that?
I want to run this like the old candy bar fundraiser. You take a sheet, you get your family, your neighbors, your church, your ballfield. Bring it back full. That's how it gets done. It's going to take the whole village. Ten thousand names. Let's see it.
