💜 September is NICU Awareness Month 💜

And while NICU awareness is something we talk about a lot around here, there are still parts of the NICU that are really hard to put into words unless you’ve lived it.

It’s the sound of the monitors you will never, ever forget.

It’s sleeping in a chair beside a tiny bed because leaving feels impossible.

It’s celebrating the smallest victories while quietly worrying about what tomorrow might bring.

It’s watching your baby fight while wishing you could fight for them.

And it’s the people…

The nurse who holds your hand.
The doctor who answers every small question.
The person who reminds you that you aren’t alone.

Some NICU families get to pack up their bag, buckle their baby into the car seat, and drive home. We know that kind of miracle firsthand with Jack.

And some families gain an angel. We know that heartbreak, too, through sweet Romy. 🤍

That’s why this month means so much to us.

Because NICU journeys don’t all have the same ending, but every baby matters. Every story matters.

This month, we’re thinking about the babies still fighting, the babies who made it home, and the babies whose tiny lives changed their families forever.

Four years ago today, Jack was discharged from the NICU and got to go home to meet his big brother and sister for the very first time! 🥹

Today, we celebrated by stocking Southwest Health with our favorite care totes, as a family. All three kids were delivered at Southwest Health, so it’s always a special treat to visit and see all the kind nurses we have met along the way.

These last few weeks always bring up a lot of emotions for both families. We want to celebrate the exciting moments, but also remember that all of this is what it is because of sweet Romy.

As the years go by, we will always promise to celebrate you, Romy. We promise to always celebrate the impact you are making on so many families’ lives. Your little light continues to make such a big difference. 💕

🌞 Jack & Romy Day - August 16th 🌞

Four years ago today, Jack was going through his fifth day in the NICU, and Jessica and Jared were just hoping for a little good news.

Then Kayla showed up.

She drove to Madison, sat with them outside the NICU, and just understood. She had been there with her sweet Romy only a year before. She knew the fear, the waiting, the heaviness, and somehow, she brought a little light with her that day.

She brought a blanket and a tote that day, too. Things that may seem so simple, but became the biggest source of comfort through those long days with Jack. A blanket that would make an impact for a lifetime.

Later that day, Jack was extubated and fought like a champ for the rest of his stay. We have no doubt Romy was a part of that recovery, watching over him and giving him a little extra strength when he needed it most.

Four years have now gone by and today we say, “Sweet Romy, thank you.”

Thank you for the little light you left behind. Thank you for bringing Kayla to Jack when his family needed her most. And thank you for inspiring something so beautiful that continues to wrap other NICU families in love.

We miss you, we love you, and we promise to keep carrying your light forward.

Romy’s mom here.

I was full of joy today restocking care totes at Crossing Rivers Health OB department. Meeting the beautiful souls who show up day and night to help bring new life into this world. Hearing the sweet sounds of newborns truly blessed my heart.

Today Ms. Romy is 5 years old in heaven. I’d be lying if I said it feels like a celebration. So many tears fall on this day as I let her memory settle all the way through me. Her birthday is a chance to reset and count our blessings. I think about how beautiful the world really is and how even though she’s not in it, I know where she is and if she could tell us, she would say there is no reason to be sad.

At dusk, we will set off fireworks for her as we do every year. Happy Birthday, sweet angel. 🌻🤍🌻
