This past weekend, we celebrated the 10 year anniversary of our Dallas ACEing Autism Program, honoring the extraordinary leadership of founders Adrienne Bransky and her son Matthew (who was just 16 at the time when the program was developed). Over fifty attendees, including Program Directors from local programs, volunteers, friends, and ACEing Autism’s founder Richard Spurling, observed a clinic and enjoyed a fun (and hot) doubles tournament.

Under the mother and son duo, the Dallas program has grown to be the largest in all of the United States, reaching 1473 families and many more in the future. Almost 3000 volunteers from across the DFW metroplex have served the community with us. Watch a short video on our 10-year journey: https://youtu.be/kkWcYl2FAMU

Love this!!

You’ve probably seen Loop. It’s the Pixar short about two kids stuck in a canoe, one of them a non-speaking autistic girl named Renee. Here’s the part that usually gets left out.

Pixar didn’t cast a speaking actress to perform as non-speaking. They cast Madison Bandy, who is autistic and non-speaking herself.

Then they changed how they work. Instead of asking her to perform on cue in a recording booth, the team built the process around her, capturing her real vocalizations in a setting where she was comfortable, and letting her lead what the character sounded like.

Renee’s voice isn’t an impression of an autistic girl. It’s an autistic girl.

Most studios ask disabled actors to fit the process. This one changed the process to fit the actor.
