โ€œMobility matters at every age.โ€ ๐Ÿพ

May is Arthritis Awareness Month. Arthritis is one of the most common causes of chronic pain in dogs and cats, and the signs can be subtle โ€” slowing down, jumping less, stiffness, decreased use of cat scratching post, or changes in behavior.

Early recognition through physical exams and imaging, along with a multimodal treatment plan, will help pets stay comfortable and active longer. If you notice changes in your petโ€™s mobility or behavior, talk with your veterinarian about options to support their quality of life! ๐Ÿ’•

We would sincerely like to thank and for a wonderful day of ophthalmology CE yesterday in Bellevue! Our members enjoyed a 6-hour intensive on uveitis, feline ophthalmology, brachycephalic ophthalmology, indolent ulcers, enucleation tips, and ocular emergencies. This was an excellent lecture that definitely boosted confidence in what we can do in the GP and ER settings for our ophtho patients!

The WSVMA staff team gathered for their annual retreat yesterday. We want to thank Tanner Electrical Coop who shared their meeting space with us. A focus for the day was how to improve communications with Members and the Vet Med community. One strategy is to declutter Membersโ€™ InBoxes and the Newsletter by putting more content on social media. Here we are discussing our Social Media strategy with Dr. Victoria McLean who leads the Boards Social Media and Communications Committee.

Power of 10 update! Our cohort has been having a great year so far. In January, they joined the WSVMA and our stakeholders for our annual Advocacy Day in Olympia! They were able to speak with representative Dr. Lisa Parshley about several bills that would potentially impact veterinary medicine in Washington state.

In February, P10 participant Dr. Claire Stein joined WSVMA president Dr. Sally Thompson-Iritani for the AVMA legislative fly-in in Washington DC. They had the opportunity to meet with legislators at the Capitol to discuss important issues affecting veterinarians nationwide.

In April, Dr. Michelle Harcha spoke with the P10 group about leading with emotional intelligence, giving and receiving feedback, and conflict management. These are important skills for leading in the workplace that we donโ€™t necessarily learn in veterinary school.

Our next in-person P10 meeting is in June regarding personal and financial wellness! If you a recently graduated veterinarian in Washington state and you are interested in learning more about the Power of 10, let us know!

Every veterinarian has felt it: the profession is changing fast, and the loudest voices aren't always the right ones.

The WSVMA Board of Directors is where Washington's veterinary community sets the course. And right now, three seats are open.

Here's the plan:

1. Submit your nomination by May 15
2. Meet with the Leadership Committee in July
3. Start your three-year term in September 2026

Don't let someone else decide the future of your profession. Step into the room.
