Local businesses will be open and need your support throughout this disruption.

Please be advised that the southern half of Chute Street will be closed for utility work, including water main replacement, on the following dates:

• Thursday, June 18
• Tuesday, June 23 to Thursday, June 25
• Sunday, June 28 (Morning only)

Preventative utility work is necessary to protect local businesses and residents from sudden disruptions in service. Current utility excavation on Chute Street revealed a section of water main in poor condition. If the damaged water main is left in place, there is a significant risk of an emergency water main break during later phases of the Downtown Improvements project due to heavy paving and curbing work. Replacing the water main during a controlled shutdown will greatly reduce the risk of future unplanned disruptions.

Utility work is currently underway at the High Street and Chute Street intersection, with electrical conduit to be placed tomorrow, June 18. Electrical conduit will be placed prior to water main replacement to avoid conflicts between utility crews.

Preparation for the water main replacement will occur on June 23-25, and the pipe replacement will occur the morning of Sunday, June 28 (starting 6:00AM). Any temporary disruption to water service to the adjacent buildings due to the replacement will occur on Sunday, June 28. Additional notification will be sent directly to businesses and residents whose service will be affected by the water main replacement.

Beginning Monday, June 22, construction will take place on the intersection of Main Street and Salem Street as the Town completes improvements to the traffic signals.

The project is expected to last approximately one to two weeks. Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians should expect temporary detours and delays in the area. The work will be scheduled to minimize impacts during peak commuting hours; however, we encourage residents to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use caution when traveling through the construction zone.

Thank you for your patience as we make these important safety and accessibility improvements to our community. To stay up to date with all DPW construction projects go to https://www.readingma.gov/234/Road-Resurfacing-Construction-Updates

Today, June 19, we join communities across the country in recognizing Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a day to honor freedom, reflect on history, celebrate resilience, and continue building communities rooted in respect, inclusion, and opportunity for all.

Here in Reading, North Reading, and across our local Massachusetts community, may today be a reminder of the importance of learning from the past, supporting one another in the present, and working together toward a stronger future.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Juneteenth.
