I’m sitting in my office this morning reminiscing over my life as I spend time with the Lord reading from Ecclesiastes 7:1-14. The Lord has been so good to me and I can see His involvement is every stage of my life. Yet too often as a young man, I’ve been so caught up in chasing after the things of this world that I never noticed what He was doing. Verse 5 says, “It is better to listen to the rebuke of a wise man than for one to listen to the song of fools.” I’m forced to admit that for much of my life, the song of fools was more enticing than the rebuke of the wise men that were there to influence me. The Lord blessed me with older men who loved the Lord deeply and were wise in their knowledge of scripture. Men who showed courage as they lived their lives, loved their families, and willingly sacrificed whatever the Lord asked of them. Men who would speak into my life (though often as a young man not seeing the wisdom in their counsel) wisdom that has help shape my life. Verse 8 says, “The end of a matter is better than its beginning. Patience of spirit is better than haughtiness of spirit.” To my shame, I was more often “haughty in spirit” than patient. I can’t help but wonder how different things might have been in my role as a husband, father, friend, and pastor if I had been quicker to embrace the wisdom those men were trying to input into my life. Verse 9 says, “Do not be eager in your heart to be angry for anger resides in the bosom of fools.” As I look back over my life, I realize how much damage I’ve done because of being angry over things I thought I could control rather than fully trusting God as He carried out His plan for my life. Verse 12 says, “Wisdom is protection, but the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the lives of its possessors.” God wants to do so much more in us and with us, but to often we spend too much time listening to the song of fools rather than to the voices of wise men. I pray that in this stage of my life, I may be counted among those of faith who are “patient of spirit” that can impart wisdom into the lives of the generation that follows as it was done for me. Remember who you are and whose you are. Love you guys!

The apostle Peter began his first letter like this, “To those who reside as aliens”. The people he was writing to were scattered across Roman controlled territory and Rome condemned new religions. Christianity had no ancient history and because they believed in One God, refusing to acknowledge a polytheistic idea of “gods”, they were being persecuted and condemned. They were considered a “cult” because of their singleness of mind. The Roman culture would not accept them and treated them differently. The same is true in our culture today. For those of us who live our lives openly for Jesus, who refuse to “talk” like everyone else, “act” like everyone else, “react” like everyone else, “participate in sinful conduct” like everyone else, we are treated differently than everyone else. I find it interesting how people who don’t follow Jesus tend to be “guarded” around someone who lives their faith out in the open where others can visibly witness it. What a blessing it is to be treated differently by those who do not share a faith in Jesus! Yet, even those who claim a faith in Jesus often hold that faith close to the vest, carrying it around silently within themselves, behaving like everyone around them because they are fearful of being treated differently. Jesus said, “If you are ashamed of me before men, I will be ashamed of you before my Father when I return, Luke 9:26”. 1 Peter 1:6 regarding being treated differently, “In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ and though you do not see Him, you love Him and believe in Him and greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.” Walk in humility before others, but do so with confidence in Christ, knowing that we represent the only true and living God who will welcome us home one day because of openly displaying our love and faith in His Son, Jesus. Remember who you are and whose you are. Love you guys!

Life is full of different experiences. Most of our days are routine and pass without much notice, but occasionally something happens that causes us at the least, to pause or at the worst, radically disrupts the normal flow of our day. Though we may not plan out every day of our lives, deep down we desire consistency, stability, and structure. Inconsistencies in our daily routines can create imbalances that can leave us feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. We tell ourselves to just go with the flow while trying to regain control of our circumstances. But regardless of what we do, this life will always feel like “whack-a-mole”! One thing will pass and sometimes two more will pop up! So, how do we navigate life when stability and consistency seem unattainable? Lamentations 3:22-25, “The Lord’s loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning! Great is Your faithfulness. The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I have hope in Him. The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the person who seeks Him.” Nothing in this life will ever be consistent or stable, but the Lord is always consistent and He is our anchor in a world that will always be unstable. Learn to be silent before Him. Spend time in the morning with your Heavenly Father by opening His Word and praying before anything has a chance to implode during the course of your day. Remember who you are and whose you are! Love you guys!

Today we remember one of the worst days in America’s history, 9/11/2001. I remember exactly where I was when the news broke. We refer to those who die in very tragic ways as lost souls. But that term has a much deeper meaning according to scripture. There’s a day coming that will far exceed even the worst of days. The Bible calls it “The Day of the Lord”. For those who have failed to repent of their sins, embrace the love He has for them, and turn to Him, no day in history will match the horror of that coming day. The Bible refers to that day as being both “great and terrible”! Many claim that a loving God would never condemn anyone to hell and they would be right. Jesus said that He did not come to condemn but to save. He also said that those who fail to repent and believe in His name are “already condemned”. God does not condemn anyone. Our sin has already done that! For those who realize that and come to Him, He will not cast them out but give them the power to become His sons and daughters. For those of us who come to Him, it will be a great day! For all other’s, it will be a terrible day. May we live our lives in such a way that those who are in our sphere of influence will recognize their need for Jesus and trust Him to save their souls. Death holds no power over us who have been made sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father but let us never cease to pray for those who have yet to awaken to the salvation that could be theirs! Remember who you are and whose you are. Love you guys!

Thomas Watson wrote, “God cursed the ground because of man’s sin, yet many are digging for happiness there and seeking a blessing out of a curse.”
When we read from Genesis 3, we discover why this world is now in the condition it is today. A curse that has only continued to escalate as time has passed because the sin of man has continued to increase. But the accuracy of scripture continues to prove its trustworthiness as it warns that times will grow worse and worse. Yet man continues to seek the things this cursed world has to offer in order to find happiness rather than to repent and look to heaven for holiness.
Everything in this world is unsustainable, unreliable, and temporary, yet people still spend their lives pursuing things that will rob them of eternal life in the end. We look at the things we’ve accomplished, the things we’ve accumulated and call them blessings, but in reality it’s like building a fort in the snow during the month of January when spring will soon come, and all that will have been done will melt away and leave nothing behind.
True blessings are knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual discernment that come through the salvation of our souls that we receive from a loving relationship with our Heavenly Father that has been freely given to us through faith in His Son, Jesus. We can’t work hard enough to earn it. We can’t build it. We can’t buy it. We can never be good enough to deserve it. But it is more valuable than anything this world can offer.
When this world finally passes away, and it will, the only thing that will still exist is the promised life with the One who created us for all eternity because we chose Jesus over this world. The Bible speaks of a new earth that the Lord will one day create when this one passes away. But it also speaks of a hell that awaits as well. We will all decide our final destination by the choices we make in this world. Choose carefully and share your faith with those who are still digging in this world for a life that fails them in the end.
Romans 10:9-11 says, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved, for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. For the scripture says, Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” The truest blessing is to know Jesus! Remember who you are and whose you are. Love you guys!
