đź’› Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Sarah!

How long have you served?
My first shift was in February this year, I think.

Why did you decide to volunteer?
I live less than 10 minutes away, and I had been buying my own groceries at the Shop N Save. One day I noticed Helping Harvest's sign, and I had been thinking about getting involved with a local food pantry or similar effort as a way to meet people in the community and do something useful with my spare time. When I inquired about Helping Harvest, I learned that it's accessible to anyone who has a need and performs a dual benefit in reducing food waste by taking donations from other local groceries and farmers. It's a terrific mission, and with the extreme rise in cost of living, it's doing our community a really essential service. I buy many of my own groceries there now, too.

What's your favorite part about volunteering?
I have a work-from-home desk job, and I really enjoy the physical part of volunteering--it feels good to get up and move my body for a few hours. I guess it's cheating to have two answers, but I also really enjoy talking to the customers! It's great to get to know people by recognizing them week by week and sharing little bits of our lives through recipes and chatter.

Do you have a special memory of working at Helping Harvest?
One of the regular volunteers, Patsy, works almost every Saturday, and I worked a shift on the weekend it was her birthday. Patsy worked too, even though she had a party planned for that evening. I LOVED seeing the regular customers come in and be excited to see Patsy, who remembers everyone and is especially sweet with little ones. Everyone was enthusiastic about wishing her "happy birthday," and I could see that her Helping Harvest shifts bring Patsy a lot of joy too. It was early on in my volunteering, and it was inspiring!

We’re so grateful to have volunteers like Sarah who give their time, connect with our customers, and help make Helping Harvest a welcoming place in our community. 💛

Interested in volunteering? We’d love to have you join us!

Pantry staples are always good to have on hand! đź›’

Having a few everyday basics in the pantry can make meal planning a whole lot easier.

Think:
🥫 Canned goods
🍝 Pasta & rice
🥣 Dry goods
🥖 Baking essentials
🥫 Sauces & other meal basics

Stocking up when you find what you need can help you spend less time wondering, “What are we going to make for dinner?” and more time actually making it!

Stop by Helping Harvest and see what pantry staples are on the shelves this week. đź’›

Made it through most of the month, but the grocery budget is getting tight?

You’re not alone.

Here at Helping Harvest, we provide qualifying families with another way to stretch their food dollars when regular grocery prices are simply too much.

Members can shop for a variety of foods, and everything is generally 25–50% of regular retail prices.

If you or someone you know is struggling to make ends meet, stop by Helping Harvest and see if our program can help.
