A Better English Setter Rescue English Setter Rescue A Better English Setter Rescue's goal is to help unwanted, homeless English Setters by providing them a loving foster home.

When the dogs are in foster care they will be altered, evaluated, and receive all vetting needed for adoption. Each foster home will evaluate personality, behaviors and activity level. At that time the foster
home determines the home situation their foster would be happiest. Each home will be carefully screened to determine whether an English Setter is the correct choice. Home visits will be done

as well as veterinary and reference checks. English Setters in A Better English Setter Rescue’s care will never be warehoused. Each dog will live in a home situation (no kennels or living outdoors) as either the only foster dog or one of 2 adult foster dogs, so a true evaluation of each dog can occur before adoption. Typically ABESR dogs have interaction with other dogs and many times children, cats, and even birds! Every dog rescued will remain in our care until the correct match is found. Each and every dog will remain in foster care for a minimum of two (2) weeks for evaluation. ABESR will assist individuals needing to re-home their English Setters by courtesy posting the dogs on our available dog’s page. These dogs are clearly identified as courtesy posted. ABESR will not be able to attest to temperament or provide any evaluation as these dogs are not in our care or program.

Thank you to all that donated to the care for Bill and Jill! They are be prepping to leave the vets office this weekend, ready to start their new lives.

Jill is in better shape than we thought she would be thankfully! The vet couldn’t find any evidence of a past injury or damage to her back. She’ll benefit from a good joint supplement considering her age, but no major ongoing concerns. The hot spot on her hind area is being kept clean and is being treated with antibiotics, plus she’s now rocking the cone of shame. Being in a clean, sterile, and dry environment is doing wonders for it already! She got what might have been her first bath ever and is loving being fresh and clean!

Sweet little Bill on the other hand sadly tested positive for heartworms. He has months of treatment ahead on top of the fact that he needs to learn how to be a dog and enjoy life. We know with time, love, and lots of gentle trust building he is going to be the most amazing pup. His medical team is oh so in love with him. To help support Bill through treatment, which does require extended periods of crate rest, we have created an Amazon wishlist with all the supplies his foster will need!

Yesterday around 12:30 we got a call about two setters that needed placed ASAP. The owner wanted them gone immediately. Sweet Jill was purchased two years ago to be bred and after a bad back injury (that didn’t receive proper medical treatment) she never came back into heat. Little Bill didn’t show interest in hunting, and therefore was also no use to him. One of our amazing vet partners was willing to take them last night and I was able to meet them as they arrived to the office to get checked in. These two pups are now safe, but they’ve got a long road ahead of them.

Both pups arrived soaked in their own urine and absolutely filthy, it was clear they have known very little outside of an outdoor pen. Jill has been in pain since the back injury, she is stiff through her hind end and has a massive hot spot on her hip that needs urgent attention. Her mammary region also appeared swollen and distended. Despite this, she greeted me with a wagging tail and a few small kisses as though to say thank you. Bill is the tiniest little setter you have ever seen weighing in at 25.8 lbs and absolutely terrified of the world. He was attempting to crawl under anything he could find to hide. It is clear he has had little human interaction in his nearly two years of life.

Both pups will be undergoing full medical evaluation today in addition to a bath! Jill will need her past injuries assessed and ongoing care for the hot spot, in addition to addressing any potential mammary tumor concerns. Little Bill is going to need so much patience, love and affection to come out of his shell. We know there is a bouncy young setter somewhere in there!

We don’t know what all these pups will need in the coming weeks, but we do know it will be a lot! Can you help us offset some of these costs?

$5 Friday Alert 🚨

It’s raining senior setters and we need your help! This past week we welcome May (blue gal) and Annie (orange gal) into our care! These senior gals both have stories to tell!

Sweet May has only ever known life as a hunting dog on a preserve, she’s never known the comforts of a couch, cozy bed, or routine grooming and care. At 11 she was deemed too old to be useful to the hunting preserve and surrendered to us. May arrived into our care fully matted, she had to be fully shaved. Her foster said the mats she shaved off “would literally click if you tap them with your finger like you were tapping a tabletop or something”. After her glow up May did crazy zoomies through the yard! Her shave down did reveal two large mamory tumors that will require surgery in the coming weeks, in addition to senior blood work and our other standard senior vetting. She is quickly settling into the good life and gives air conditioning and cozy beds two paws up. We can’t wait to see this gal continue to glow up.

Annie’s owner went into a nursing home due to declining health and 12 year old Annie quickly needed a place to land. We thankfully had a foster who was able to pick her up immediately and provide a soft place to land! Though she is confused by her major life change, she is in the best of hands. She will need full senior vetting and spayed!

We wanted to share a massive thank you to everyone who donated toward Rain’s care and provide you with an update on how this brave girl is doing!

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised enough to cover not only Rain’s surgery but also the follow-up care she’ll need over the coming weeks. We truly cannot thank you enough. By removing the weight of these medical costs, you’ve allowed us to keep saying "yes" to other setters in need of urgent help.

Rain is finally starting to feel a bit more like herself! Her recovery from anesthesia was a bit of a rocky road, and she’s had a lot to contend with all at once. On top of the surgery to her eye, she is currently in heat and recently tested positive for two different tick-borne illnesses. We’ve seen her first few tail wags over the last couple of days, and she is absolutely loving the fresh air and beautiful spring weather in her foster family's yard.

Because her eye socket is still healing, Rain is on a strictly soft-food diet for the next few weeks. She’s currently a very picky eater, which has made administering her medications a bit of a challenge. To support her body through this healing process, she needs high-quality wet food!

We’ve put together a wishlist for Rain to help offset these food costs for her foster family. If you’re able to send a few cans her way, it would make a world of difference in her recovery journey!
