If your fire department received an invitation to participate in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Experience Survey, please remind your fire chiefs and administrators to submit their findings by Friday, August 14.

For more than 40 years, NFPA’s Fire Loss and Fire Injury Reports have relied on data from thousands of fire departments. Your participation helps us better understand the U.S. fire problem and develop accurate national estimates.

Sudden cardiac death remains a critical concern among firefighters. That’s according to the latest “Fatal Firefighter Injuries in the U.S. in 2025” report from NFPA, which shows that overall a total of 83 U.S. firefighters died last year while on duty or from fatal heart attacks, strokes, aneurysms, or other medical conditions within 24 hours of duty. The total number of firefighter fatalities was a 17 percent increase over 2024.

This report includes patterns by type of duty at time of fatal injury, cause and nature of injury, age, type of incident and type of property involved in fires.

NFPA is encouraging fire departments to participate in a new NIOSH survey to help improve the Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program. The survey will help ensure the program continues to provide valuable insights that strengthen firefighter safety and health.
