Today, The Hundred Club of Massachusetts remembers David C. Fitzgerald, a dedicated 31-year veteran of the Somerville Fire Department whose life was defined by service and commitment to others.
A firefighter, a veteran, and a member of his community, David answered the call whenever he was needed. His years of service to Somerville reflected a deep commitment to protecting others, while his military service during the Cuban Missile Crisis was another testament to his willingness to serve and stand ready when his country needed him.
David’s dedication was recognized with the Somerville Fire Department’s Medal of Honor, awarded posthumously in recognition of his service and sacrifice.
Today, we remember Firefighter Fitzgerald with gratitude and honor. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and the Somerville Fire Department.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

62 years ago today, five firefighters from Boston Fire Department answered an alarm on Trumbull Street. They never came home.

On October 1, 1964, Boston Fire Department Lt. John J. McCorkle, Lt. John J. Geswell, Firefighter Robert J. Clougherty, Firefighter Francis L. Murphy, and Firefighter James B. Sheedy made the ultimate sacrifice while battling a five-alarm fire in a vacant toy factory in Boston’s South End.

When a front wall suddenly collapsed, five families lost a husband, a father, a son, a brother, and a friend. Twelve other firefighters were injured.

Today, The Hundred Club of Massachusetts remembers these five courageous firefighters:

Lt. John J. McCorkle
Lt. John J. Geswell
Firefighter Robert J. Clougherty
Firefighter Francis L. Murphy
Firefighter James B. Sheedy

Our hearts are with their loved ones, friends, and the members of their departments who continue to carry their memory and legacy forward.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

October is Fire Prevention Month, a time to recognize the importance of fire safety and the firefighters who work every day to protect communities across Massachusetts.

At The Hundred Club of Massachusetts, our commitment to the fire service extends beyond the line of duty. Since 1959, we have stood behind the families of fallen firefighters, providing financial, educational and emotional support and ensuring their sacrifice is never forgotten.

This month, we honor those who serve, remember those we have lost and encourage everyone to make fire safety a priority at home and in their communities. Learn more about our mission at 100clubmass.org.
