October 26, 1996 marks the anniversary of the first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States. Members of the now defunct Intersex Society of North America and their allies arrived in Boston, MA at the annual conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics. They demonstrated and shared their pain in a very public way, denouncing non-consensual infant ge***al surgeries and demanding the medical industry take notice. Doctors dismissed the activists as a vocal minority in a 1997 New York Times article covering the intersex action. The tides are slowly changing.

TODAY, intersex people and our allies are following in their footsteps, organizing in cities around the U.S., and around the world.

Ace Week (founded as Asexual Awareness Week in 2010) is an annual event that puts asexuality in the spotlight. Part celebration of the progress we’ve made as a community, and part campaign for greater understanding and acceptance of asexual-spectrum identities, Ace Week is a time to focus on all things ace*.

The ace community has made significant headway over the years. Asexual representation in mainstream media continues to improve, major LGBTQ+ organizations now acknowledge and include us, and ace community groups have sprouted up and flourished in cities around the world. Ace Week gives us an opportunity to recognize these achievements and the efforts that made them possible.

Though we have much to celebrate, the fight for visibility and acceptance is still ongoing. Ace identities are often overlooked or misunderstood, and many aces still grow up not realizing that asexuality is an option. Since the issues aces face are directly influenced by their other marginalized identities, many in our community—especially aces of color, disabled aces, and aces with other LGBTQ+ identities—can face significant barriers to equality and acceptance.

International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people. Together, we can transform society to celebrate people’s multiple, intersecting identities.

Spirit Day is an annual LGBTQ awareness day established in 2010 to rally people against bullying. Spirit Day reinforces the importance of kindness, while also providing young readers with strategies to be a supportive friend. Published and created in partnership with GLAAD, this book aims to accelerate LGBTQ inclusivity and acceptance.

• The Society for Human Rights—the first known U.S. gay rights organization—was founded in Chicago by Henry Ge**er.
• 1973: The American Psychiatric Association (APA) removed homosexuality from its official manual of mental disorders.
• 1978: Openly gay San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk was assassinated (on November 27, though October marks significant periods of his activism and political impact).
• 1987: The AIDS Memorial Quilt was first displayed publicly on the National Mall in Washington, D.C..
• 2010: The federal policy "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" was officially repealed (signed into law/ruling phases around late 2010).
• 2017: Danica Roem was elected as the first openly transgender state legislator seated in U.S. history in Virginia.

Indigenous Peoples' Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October (falling on October 12, 2026) to honor Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian peoples, their cultures, and their histories.

National Coming Out Day exists to promote a safe, inclusive and loving world where LGBTQ+ people can live truthfully, openly and without fear. As the internet has become an integral part of our lives, it often holds a critical role in the coming out process, especially for LGBTQ+ youth who can receive affirming support and grow into themselves in online spaces without judgement. It is absolutely critical to practice internet safety and put you or your child’s mental health first, but engaging with welcoming LGBTQ+ online spaces can show us we are worthy of respect and celebration. Coming out is still so powerful—our stories, our identities and our experiences give us collective strength.

WHAT IS INTERNATIONAL LE***AN DAY?
International Le***an Day is an annual day to celebrate and bring visibility to le****ns in the LGBT+ community. The purpose of the date is to celebrate and shine a light on the diversity of le****ns internationally. Whilst the exact foundation of International Le***an Day is uncertain, it is widely believed that it began in Australia and New Zealand in 1980 when a Le***an Day March was held in New Zealand. The first Australian event was held at the Collingwood Town Hall in Melbourne on October 13, 1990.
