Women’s Equality Day is a national moment in the United States to celebrate the
incorporation of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution in 1920, which grants women the right to vote. While there continued to be difficulties for women, particularly women of color, in utilizing this right, this was a huge step toward a more gender-equal society. Women’s Equality Day, therefore, provides time for reflection – to celebrate our progress thus far and acknowledge the work still necessary to achieve gender equality in the United States.

Aug 28, 1985—Desert Hearts, a le***an-themed romantic drama film loosely based on the Jane Rule novel, Desert of the Heart, is released.

Aug 29, 1867—Karl Heinrich Ulrichs speaks publicly for gay and le***an rights.

Aug 29, 2013—The U.S. Treasury Department rules that legally married same-s*x couples will be treated as married for tax purposes, even if they live in a state that doesn’t recognize same-s*x marriage.

Aug, 1971—Le***an Tide, the first le***an news periodical is published.

Aug, 1973—American Bar Association calls for repeal of laws against consensual s*x.

On August 19th, we mark World Humanitarian Day: a time to honor humanitarian workers and to stand with people affected by crises around the world.

When lives are at risk, the people who come to help should never be targets. Yet humanitarian workers continue to be killed, injured, abducted, detained and obstructed while carrying out their work. Most are national staff serving their own communities.

Under international humanitarian law, civilians — including humanitarian and medical personnel — must be respected and protected. Parties to armed conflict must allow and facilitate humanitarian relief for people in need, in accordance with international humanitarian law.

Attacks on humanitarian personnel have consequences far beyond the individuals directly affected. They interrupt food deliveries, health care, protection and other life-saving services, leaving communities with even fewer ways to survive and recover.

Aug 20, 2011—Chely Wright married LGBT advocate Lauren Blitzer in a private ceremony on a country estate in Connecticut by both a rabbi and a reverend.

Aug 20-22, 1976—Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival holds its first gathering.

August 21, 2014—The US District Court for the Northern District of Florida ruled the state’s same-s*x marriage ban unconstitutional. Same-s*x marriage has been legal in Florida since January 6, 2015, as a result of a ruling in Brenner v. Scott from the same court.

Aug 11-18, 1968—NACHO formally becomes the first gay political coalition

Aug 12, 2004—The California Supreme Court orders San Francisco officials, including Mayor Gavin Newsom, not to license additional same-s*x marriages.

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day of the World's Indigenous People is observed on August 9 each year to promote and protect the rights of the world’s Indigenous population. Also known as World Tribal Day, this event also recognizes the achievements and contributions that Indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection.

Aug 4, 2010—Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker from the United States District Court/Northern District of California decides that Perry v. Schwarzenegger (pro 8) is unconstitutional

Aug 5-21, 2016—A record number of “out” athletes compete in the summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The Human Rights Campaign estimates that there are at least 41 openly le***an, gay and bis*xual Olympians – up from 23 that participated in London 2012.

Aug 5, 2004—A Washington judge rules the state’s law defining marriage is unconstitutional

Aug 6. 1994—Japanese American Citizens League Supports Same-Gender Marriage

Aug 8, 1978—International Le***an and Gay Association is founded

July 25: In 1985, actor Rock Hudson acknowledged he was suffering from AIDS in Paris, a disclosure that served as a massive turning point in building global public awareness and galvanizing support for the cause.

International Drag Day is celebrated on July 16 every year. It is a day to celebrate and honor the art of drag and the drag culture. This day was created to recognize and appreciate the drag queens, drag kings, and all members of the LGBTQ+ community who have made a significant contribution to the drag community.

On International Drag Day, people come together to celebrate their love of drag. Many cities around the world host drag shows, parties, and other events to celebrate the day. The events often feature drag queens, drag kings, and other members of the LGBTQ+ community. People can also take part in activities such as drag races, drag competitions, and more.

International Non-Binary People's Day is an annual celebration honoring and embracing the full spectrum of non-binary genders and identities. First observed on 14 July 2012, the day has been marked on the same date every year since, serving as both a celebration of non-binary existence and a platform for raising awareness of the distinct challenges that non-binary individuals navigate in their everyday lives.

The day gained broader recognition in 2015, and continues to be observed annually on 14 July, drawing increasing support and participation from communities and organizations around the world.
