Am I being selfish? Is it time, but I want her to stay for me? I absolutely hate this part of senior rescue.

Maggie joined us in December 2023. She was deaf and had heart problems from the very beginning. Not your typical murmur. Her heart would actually stop occasionally and she would faint. For the most part, we've kept it under control over the years with medications.

I took her to the vet last week after noticing she seemed bloated. She said her heart is starting to fail, and because of the fluid location, draining is not an option. She increased her diuretic again, and added an anti-inflammatory. She said if there's no improvement in 5 days, I needed to consider euthanasia. Today is day 5. Maggie did have cataracts, but I also noticed Maggie very quickly went completely blind. The vet believes the detachment was caused by lack of oxygen to her eyes. To sum it up, Maggie is deaf, blind, and she struggles to breathe.

I keep hoping and praying for a miracle that I know is not going to happen. What do I do? I hate writing these sad posts, but what I hate more is making the decisions alone.

Today is Fairy's Gotcha Day! Her rescue journey took her from being found tied in a pillowcase and tossed on the road, to being adopted by a wonderful couple in Northern Virginia. She even has two sisters to play with. This sweet girl will now have the family every dog dreams of!

There has to be someone who wants this derpy guy. Full disclosure - we know he sometimes forgets about the placement of his tongue when he's relaxed, but all you have to do is remind him and he'll slurp it right back in. 🤣

Yes, he is on seizure medication. The truth is he had one seizure the day after he arrived. It was probably brought on by stress. Our vet put him on phenobarbital and no seizure since. The medication is definitely reasonable - only $17 for a one month supply at the Amazon Pharmacy. No other health issues!

Sherman is an incredibly loyal dog. He stays by your side. I see Sherman possibly being adopted by someone retired and maybe lonely, who just wants companionship. That is all Sherman wants too.

I noticed Timmy had bloody urine, and at times was straining to p*e a few drops. I didn't sleep at all that night, worried about how painful that must be. I took him to Cumberland Animal Hospital expecting to hear that the little man had bladder stones. I was not expecting to be told it was prostate or bladder cancer. The vet put him on an antibiotics and also an anti-inflammatory to make him more comfortable. Right now he is still eating and drinking. We're hoping he has a few good months. If I noticed he's in too much pain, and his quality of life is no longer there, it would be time to make that very difficult decision.

Anticipatory grief. It's difficult being happy when you know what's around the corner. I am so incredibly attached to every one of my sanctuary dogs. I'm very content being single and surrounded by these precious seniors, but it's times like this that I wish I wasn't so alone.

Queenie was an incredibly special little old lady. She didn't ask for much. As a matter of fact, in the years we've had her, I never once heard her bark. She was never demanding. All she wanted was food in her belly and a cozy bed.

As cute as she was, we knew because of her incontinence that the chances of her being adopted were slim, and that was ok. Over time I became attached, and felt like this little old lady was exactly what Miko's Sanctuary represented. Other than cleaning her play pen in the morning, she was no trouble at all.

Queenie enjoyed just moseying around in the yard. Cora fostered her for a bit to give her a change of pace. We both loved her dearly. The way she would just meander around, a content little girl without a care in the world.

No trouble at all, clear to the very end. I didn't have to go through all of those heartbreaking emotions tied to euthanizing a beloved pet. Queenie spared me that hell, and I'm so grateful for that.

I found Queenie in her favorite bed, having passed in her sleep. She looked so peaceful. Her eyes were closed and she even appeared to be smiling.

We don't know what happened, and it doesn't really matter. Other than treatments and supplements for her arthritis and stubborn UTI's, she appeared healthy. She was one of the few dogs in this house not on medications or special diets. Her bloodwork was checked twice this year. She was even cleared and had a dental just last month.

Run free, my sweet girl. Cora and I were honored to be a part of your final chapter. You are loved beyond measure.
