On Sunday, August 2, Dr. Kenneth Vitellas returned for his second live interview, continuing a monthly series dedicated to dementia awareness, caregiver support, education, and hope.
During this month's conversation, Dr. Vitellas shared his personal journey with his wife, Lisa, whose Alzheimer's diagnosis inspired the founding of EnergizeCare. He also discussed the importance of supporting care partners, the vision for Lisa's Place, and See Our Wonderful People®—the nation's first federally trademarked dementia awareness symbol, encouraging everyone to look beyond the diagnosis and see the wonderful person first.

On Sunday, August 2, Dr. Kenneth Vitellas returned for his second live interview, continuing a monthly series dedicated to dementia awareness, caregiver support, education, and hope.

Yesterday, we shared a little about the emotional side of what we’re trying to accomplish at EnergizeCare. Thursday’s day at the Columbus Zoo was filled with smiles, laughter and meaningful moments. Today, I’d like to share what it was really all about.

At the heart of our mission is something called respite care.

During our Zoo respite sessions, care partners drop off their loved ones living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia knowing they are in a safe, caring and nurturing environment. While their loved one enjoys a fun, engaging morning, the care partner has something they often don’t get enough of… time to rest.

Many people aren’t familiar with the word “respite.” Simply put, it means REST. It gives caregivers the opportunity to go home and recharge, run errands, meet a friend or simply enjoy a few quiet hours without worry. That break can make an incredible difference.

Our Zoo Respite program is especially meaningful because it naturally includes so many activities that benefit those living with dementia. Spending time outdoors, seeing the animals, walking, socializing with others and sharing a healthy lunch all provide physical, mental and emotional stimulation in a joyful setting. One of the biggest highlights is our silent disco, where participants put on wireless headphones, dance to the music and simply enjoy the moment. It’s amazing to watch the smiles, laughter and memories that music can bring to life.

In just a few short months, these Zoo Respite sessions will transition to Lisa’s Place, our dedicated respite care center. There, we’ll be able to provide this same compassionate care in a welcoming space designed specifically for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, while giving even more care partners the opportunity to rest, renew and recharge.

Thursday was a wonderful reminder of why respite care matters so much. It wasn’t just a trip to the zoo. It was a few precious hours of joy for our participants and a few precious hours of peace for the people who love them most.

If you know someone caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, we hope you’ll share our mission with them. No one should have to walk this journey alone.

What a day.

It’s amazing how one person’s vision can touch the hearts of so many.

That’s the power of human connection.

Yesterday, we witnessed firsthand how Dr. Ken Vitellas’ passion for serving families living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia continues to create moments of joy, hope and connection. What began with one family’s journey (his) has grown into a mission that is making a difference in the lives of so many.

Members of the EnergizeCare team gathered at the Columbus Zoo alongside four incredible program participants and their care providers for a day filled with laughter, dancing, storytelling and genuine connection. It was a beautiful reminder that sometimes the greatest gift we can give is simply our presence.

We were also thankful to have The Columbus Dispatch with us as they documented the mission and impact of EnergizeCare.

One of the most meaningful moments came as Ken shared a personal story about each of our four program participants. Just then, and much to everyone’s surprise, Lisa, Ken’s wife arrived with her care partner.

Lisa is the inspiration behind EnergizeCare and the reason our future respite center will proudly bear the name “Lisa’s Place”. Her arrival made an already emotional day even more impactful. There was more than one wet eye in the crowd.

Days like yesterday remind us that our mission is about so much more than respite care. It’s about creating moments of joy, preserving dignity, supporting caregivers and reminding families that they are never alone.

A heartfelt thank you to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for generously providing complimentary admission for our program participants, caregivers and volunteers. Your kindness helped create a day filled with smiles, connection and memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, I’ll share more about what made yesterday so special and why it was such an important day for EnergizeCare. 💜

The planning has begun!

EnergizeCare Founder Dr. Ken Vitellas and Board Advisor Richard Golda are hard at work putting the finishing touches on what promises to be one of Columbus’ premier charitable events!

📣📣 New Partnership Announcement

EnergizeCare is proud to announce that we officially signed a one-year Community Care, Education and Engagement Partnership with Concierge Caregiving, founded and led by Jennifer Glasscoe.

Our organizations share a commitment to improving the lives of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias while providing education, respite, engagement, hope, and support to their care partners and families.

Twelve members of the Concierge Caregiving team have already completed the certified EnergizeCare Education and Training Program, approved through the Dementia Connection Institute. Every Concierge Caregiving professional care partner who accompanies a client to an EnergizeCare program or volunteers with us will be required to complete this certified training.

Through this partnership, Concierge Caregiving will:

• Promote Dementia Friends and EnergizeCare education
• Connect appropriate families with respite, engagement, scholarships, transportation, and care partner support
• Sponsor one professional care partner volunteer shift each week
• Support programs at the Columbus Zoo, Healthy New Albany, EnergizeCare Dublin – Lisa’s Place, and other EnergizeCare locations
• Help us measure meaningful outcomes for families and individuals living with dementia

We are grateful to Jennifer and her team for their compassion, professionalism, and dedication to high-quality, person-centered dementia care.

Together, we are building greater connection, dignity, education, respite and hope throughout Central Ohio.

Yesterday, EnergizeCare was proud to be part of the Taste of New Albany! 💜

We loved being a part of this amazing community event. Our table was designed to introduce new people to EnergizeCare, start conversations and help raise awareness throughout our community of our mission!

We loved meeting so many new people, sharing who we are and connecting with everyone who stopped by. Thank you to all who visited our table and helped make the day such a success.
