Sometimes, we just need a photo of an owl in a towel to make our day a little better. 🦉💜

Featuring Luta, our Eastern Screech-Owl Ambassador!

Luta was admitted to a rehabilitation center in Michigan after suffering a fractured wing. Unfortunately, his wing was unable to heal well enough for him to fly again, which meant he could not be returned to the wild.

Thankfully, Luta found his way to Ohio Wildlife Center, where he now has an important new role as one of our ambassador animals, helping educate our community about how to peacefully coexist with native wildlife.

Howloween is back! This evening is perfect for any ghoul or goblin who loves animals. Trick-or-treat across our property and visit with our animals along the way! Dissect owl pellets, make crafts with leaves from around our property, and enjoy a s'more by the bonfire!

Registration is required for this event.

When: Friday, October 23rd from 5-7pm
Where: 9000 Dublin Rd
Cost: $5 per person (more activities available for an additional fee)

💜🦅 Freedom Friday! 🦅💜

Another wild life is back where it belongs! 🎉

Red-tailed Hawk Patient #6673 took to the skies last week after 39 days of care and recovery at Ohio Wildlife Center!

This hawk was found lying on its back in downtown Columbus and brought to our Wildlife Rehabilitation Center for help. While we may never know exactly what happened, possible causes included West Nile virus, a vehicle strike, or a window collision.

Our team provided supplemental feeding and hydration while monitoring the hawk’s recovery. After 39 days, the hawk demonstrated strong flight and was ready for the moment we were all working toward: release back into the wild!

Fall is here and leaves are falling. Our box turtles want to remind you to step away from the leaf blower and leave the leaves! 🍂🍁🍃

🍂 Leaving leaves, brush piles, dried stems and soil alone throughout winter provides homes, nests and resources for invertebrates and pollinators.

From our friends at Xerces Society:

🍂 “Leaving the leaves and other plant debris doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your yard to the wilderness. You can do fall cleanup in moderation and still care for invertebrates. The leaves don’t need to be left exactly where they fall. You can rake them into garden beds, around tree bases, or into other designated areas. Too many leaves can kill grass, but in soil they can suppress weeds, retain moisture, and boost nutrition. In other words, leaves are a pesticide-free way to avoid weeds and a cost-free fertilizer for your garden. Why waste them?

🍂 During limited fall cleanup, avoid shredding leaves with a mower. Raking or blowing are alternatives that will keep leaves whole for the best cover and protect the insects and eggs already living there.

🍂 If you decide you need to clean up the leaves and debris more completely in the spring, make sure you wait until late in the season so as not to destroy all the life you’ve worked to protect. Or, you can just leave it!”
