We often think of grief as something that begins after a death.
But grief can also live alongside love when someone we care for is physically alive...and transforming into someone unrecognizable piece by piece.
When a loved one is living with a neurodegenerative condition, there can be losses that happen slowly, quietly, and repeatedly.
A familiar role within a relationship may change.
Plans for the future may look different.
Conversations, routines, independence, intimacy, or pieces of the person we have always known may begin to shift.
And still, the person we love is here. Right in front of us, yet so very far away.
This is part of what can make ambiguous grief so complicated.
Straddling the tension held within the paradox becomes more familiar.
The complexity of honoring that there may be deep gratitude for what remains alongside very real grief for what has changed.
There can be love and exhaustion...frustration, even.
Hope and sadness.
Connection and loneliness.
Relief and guilt.
Opposite feelings existing in the same breath.
Yet none of those experiences diminish the love held between two humans--even with the complexity and ever shifting role of providing care for someone we love most in the world varies day by day.
Tomorrow, we will welcome our Fall group of Care Partners back to Magnolia Harbor for the second retreat day.
As we prepare for their arrival, we are reminded that sanctuary in practice means making room for the grief that doesn't always have a name, a ritual, or a socially recognized place to be honored.
It means allowing someone to say, I love this person deeply, and this is incredibly hard and I do not know how im going to keep doing this.
Both can be true all at the same time.
And both deserve to be held with compassion, connection, and in community.

Frens.
look at this precious Frenship.
Rowan lost her very best Fren, Stella, on July 2nd.
for the last two months, she has been very quiet and to herself.
Rowan has honored her need to be quiet in moments of solitude to grieve her best Fren....and.....ever so gently, is starting to find her way to reaching out and trusting her donkey Frens.
on her own timeline. for the length of time that feels right for her.
both Cracker Jack and Jalapeno honor her boundaries and need for quiet solitude......and.....when she is ready, they are waiting and ready to meet her where she is exactly how she is with no expectation or condition that she be any different.
what a gift it is to have these precious beings guiding our hearts and keeping us grounded in gentle presence bearing compassionate and kind witness. 💜

Shade sail for the piggies to stay cool from the summer sun ?
Ellie Mae and Beau vote the shade sail also happens to be the best hammock playground for them.

Grief does not need
to be fixed.
It does not need
to be rushed.
It does not follow
a timeline.
And it does not ask us
to leave behind the ones we love.
Grief asks for something different.
To be witnessed.
To have space for the love,
the longing,
the anger,
the remembering,
the missing,
and all that has changed.
At Magnolia Harbor,
grieving hearts are held with the fundamental belief that stories must be witnessed in community with tenderness, compassion, and love free of expectation or condition.
Where there is room
for both sorrow and joy.
For remembering and becoming.
For connection when grief feels lonely.
Today—and every day—we bear witness to grief.
we love you, Frens, and we are holding you with compassion and love on this National Grief Awareness Day.

This week has been a tender-hearted one, Frens.
Ellie Mae and Beau bring such grounded connection to the here and now.
To be genuinely and authentically present.
To explore nature.
And to find connection to your Frens.
Frens of all species, shapes, and sizes.
Sending love nudges to the hearts of our Frens that you find moments of connection and grounded presence in the ways your heart most needs today.
we love you, Frens.

What does sanctuary mean?
At Magnolia Harbor, sanctuary is more than a place.
It is the experience of being met exactly where you are—and not being asked to become something different in order to belong.
For our rescued animal Frens, sanctuary means there is no expectation that they perform, produce, entertain, or earn their place here. They are allowed to simply be.
To move closer when they feel safe.
To step away when they need space.
To build trust slowly.
To have their boundaries noticed and honored.
To grow old here.
To be loved here.
And we believe our human Frens deserve that kind of sanctuary, too.
Trauma and traumatic grief can change the way we experience safety, relationships, our bodies, and all we know our self in this world.
Magnolia Harbor makes space for traumatic grief to be--as simple and as complex as "being" may be.
For the grief that hurts every cell of your body.
For the nervous system that needs time.
For the story that is difficult to tell.
For silence.
For connection.
For laughter that unexpectedly happens in moments of levity (often prompted by a goat or animal Fren)
For the whole complicated experience of learning who we are on the other side of loss.
Sanctuary at Magnolia Harbor means you belong exactly as you are and for who you are free of expectation or condition that you be any different.
Thank you for trusting Magnolia Harbor with your hearts, Frens.
It is the honor of our entire hearts to hold your heart.
