Had a question from the inbox about a Pass Through Pin.
Here is an old article I did a few years ago.
This is called a Pass Through Pin or just Pass Pin and dates back to the early 50’s.
The pin itself is a Navy laundry Pin that is still used today to close up a mesh bag that Sailors put their laundry in. Onboard a ship, all your laundry is washed inside this mesh bag. Imagine how difficult it would be to separate each man’s clothing if they weren’t washed in an enclosed bag like this.
These pins were and are to this day issued in boot camp after you had “Passed Through” the gate. It, along with the mesh bag used to be the first piece of gear issued to you.
So after WWII when MCs became a little territorial it became important to let these clubs know that you are just passing through. By the 1960’s it was a little more explicit, meaning that the wearer of this pin was just traveling through and not trying to set up a chapter or generally start any s**t.
Unfortunately the drug wars pretty much put an end to the honor system that had evolved around the use of this pin. Today it still has the same meaning but very few even know what it is. If a brother from Club "A" rides through "B’s" area, this pin will not be sufficient for him to ride through without issues.
What this pin today really means is that the wearer believes in the old way of doing things. Most of the really old clubs still use them. I think 90% of my club brothers fly one today.
Hope this answered your question
