Sorry folks - we’ve been a bit backed up!

We did finish the structural stabilization project at the Sterling a couple weeks ago - just getting around to posting the pictures we took along the way.

Today’s post is highlighting the replacement framing + steel members that went in the Terrace Room as well as the kitchen wing.

Check back in a few days for the final end result!

WELL… what do we have here?

During repairs to the kitchen wing at the Sterling Inn, workers discovered a little surprise hidden under the floor - a hand dug stone well!

We aren’t sure of the exact date, but are thinking likely pre - 1920, possibly earlier. We don’t have much information about the rear of the building to go off of.

Super, super cool find. We can’t wait to see what else we will uncover!

Work continues this week at Sterling!

Today, workers from Woodledge Property Preservation began the interior demolition of the kitchen area, exposing some areas with damage. These areas will be reinforced, and a new floor will be built in this space.

Additionally, work continues in the Terrace room. Steel beams are in, and the joists are going in now.

Work continues today on the Sterling Inn!

Workers from Woodledge Property Preservation are finishing up interior demolition of the 1955 Terrace Room. All new footers will be poured, and two large steel beams will be installed to support the load of the new floor.

Once finished, it’ll be strong enough for one heck of a party!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Eastern Pennsylvania Preservation Society (EPPS) is proud to announce that structural repairs and stabilization is beginning on the Historic Sterling Inn’s Main Building, constructed in phases between 1855 through 1955.

This work is being completed by Woodledge Property Preservation, and overseen by EPPS President Tyler Schumacher, and member Nick Colella.

The project is being fully funded by current owners of the property and is a precursor to additional full renovations throughout the rest of the 103 acre property.

Please stay tuned as we continue to post photos during the progress of the work!

Did you know the Sterling Inn property has a barn?

Situated atop a small bluff overlooking Mirror Lake rests this gorgeous barn built in the mid 1800s. Originally, this structure was one of 3 additional outbuildings for what was once a private farmhouse, later turned Fern Dell Resort, and later known as Hilltop.

What happened to the other two buildings isn’t known, but this was almost lost to time as well if it wasn’t for the Logan kids who managed to practically rebuild it from near ruin.

The Logan’s used it to house their horses, and most recently it was used for a variety of farm animals by a former caretaker.

What replaces a historic church in Pottstown?

The developers of the former Transfiguration Lutheran Church (which burned a few months ago) in Pottstown have released their plans for what will replace the historic building.

The property in question is located along a stretch of Hanover Street that is lined with amazingly intact Victorian homes, businesses, and churches - creating a streetscape that has remained unchanged for over 100 years. This new apartment building would be a scar on that streetscape.

Additionally, the property is located within a National Register Historic District, and is governed by the regulations of the Pottstown HARB.

Recently, three Pottstown council members out of 7 voted for approval of this project. Now it moves to the zoning board for approval or denial.

The Eastern Pennsylvania Preservation Society calls for the zoning board and the borough as a whole to work with the developers on this project to deliver a design that more closely matches the buildings in the neighborhood that surround it.

We cannot let developers ruin our neighborhood's character and identity just for a quick buck.
