Nyonna L. Byers has been doing HIV-led community work for years, with a strong focus on Black and Brown people and other underserved communities across Hampton Roads. Her work has included HIV education, prevention, testing, linkage and retention in care, PrEP access, outreach, housing support, transportation assistance, and helping people overcome barriers that keep them from receiving care.

Before founding ETSI Health Clinic, Nyonna served as a Peer Navigator/HIV Educator with Minority AIDS Support Services (MASS) in Norfolk, where her HIV advocacy and education work was already well established. (Minority Aids Support Services)

Through Empowering Transgender Services and ETSI Health Clinic, she expanded that work into direct services. In October 2023, the Virginia Community HIV Planning Group featured Nyonna for an Agency Spotlight on Empowering Transgender Services, recognizing the work being done for transgender communities and people impacted by HIV. (Virginia Regulatory Town Hall)

In 2024, Nyonna opened ETSI Health Clinic in Portsmouth, providing HIV/STI testing, treatment, prevention and supportive services. By 2026, the clinic was reported to be keeping approximately 120 patients connected to care while continuing to serve people who may otherwise fall through the cracks. (WHRO Public Media)

Nyonna was also spotlighted through SHAAD (Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day) for her HIV leadership and community work. Her recognition through SHAAD is another part of a much longer story: Nyonna did not just recently enter HIV advocacyโ€”she has spent years educating, navigating, advocating and ultimately building HIV-focused services for communities that have historically been underserved.

From Peer Navigator and HIV Educator, to community advocate, to founder of an HIV-led organization and clinic, Nyonna L. Byersโ€™ work has consistently centered on ending HIV transmission, reducing stigma, connecting people to care, and making sure transgender people and other underserved communities have a place at the table.

EVERYONE IS HIV POSSIBLE โ€ผ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธโ€ผ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿ›‘

Nyonna Byers is a community advocate from Virginia dedicated to improving the lives of Transwomen in her community.
