On May 19, 1776, American forces defending a garrison at The Cedars (near Montreal) surrendered to a combined British, Canadian, and Mohawk force during the American invasion of Canada.:
A detachment of the Continental Army under Colonel Timothy Bedel was forced to surrender after a confrontation with British Captain George Forster and Mohawk warriors led by Joseph Brant. Over 500 American soldiers were eventually taken as prisoners in the engagements that week.
