On behalf of the organizers and participants of the Portland Memorial Day Parade, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Town of Portland for its overwhelming support and patriotism this Memorial Day.

Despite Mother Nature’s lack of grace, our community came together in remarkable fashion to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. The rain may have dampened the streets, but it did not diminish the spirit of remembrance, gratitude, and unity displayed by those who attended.

This year’s tribute carried even greater significance as our nation approaches the 250th Anniversary of American independence. For nearly two and a half centuries, generations of Americans have defended the ideals of liberty, justice, and freedom upon which this great nation was founded. Memorial Day serves as a solemn reminder that these freedoms were preserved through the courage and sacrifice of those who answered the call to serve.

From veterans organizations, marching groups, civic leaders, volunteers, first responders, and residents lining the parade route, Portland once again demonstrated the deep respect our town holds for our fallen heroes and their families. Honoring our fallen soldiers has long been woven into the fabric of Portland’s history and traditions, reflecting the enduring patriotism and community spirit that continue to define our town. We do not cancel, we show up - We Will Never Forget.

We sincerely thank everyone who participated, assisted behind the scenes, donated their time, or stood in support along the route. Your presence ensured that the tradition of remembrance remains strong as we look toward celebrating 250 years of American independence and the sacrifices that made it possible.

With gratitude,
Sara Sterry Rutter

**The Poppy Drive – Memorial Day**

Each Memorial Day, the red poppy becomes more than a flower — it becomes a symbol of remembrance, sacrifice, and gratitude for the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation. Inspired by the fields of poppies that bloomed across battle-scarred lands after World War I, the tradition continues as communities come together to honor America’s fallen heroes.

“The Poppy Drive” serves as a visible reminder that freedom was never free. Whether worn on a lapel, placed at a memorial, or shared throughout the community, the poppy stands as a tribute to courage, duty, and the enduring spirit of patriotism.

As we observe Memorial Day, may we pause to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, support the families who carry their legacy, and teach future generations the true meaning of service and remembrance.

Please remember to bring a donation to assist our veterans'

While Memorial Day falls within the broader timeframe of the United States Semiquincentennial, it is important to recognize that it is not a celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. Rather, Memorial Day stands apart as a solemn and enduring tradition—one dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
It is a day of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude for those who gave their lives to secure our freedom, preserve our way of life, and ensure the survival of our nation. While America 250 invites us to celebrate our history and progress, Memorial Day calls us to pause with humility and reverence for those who made that history—and our future---possible

A Heartfelt Thank You

I want to sincerely thank everyone who participated in this year’s Portland Memorial Day Parade. Your presence and support mean the world to me.

A special thank you to our Police Department, Fire Department, and First Selectman Michael Pelton for their ongoing commitment and dedication.

Portland has proudly held a Memorial Day Parade since 1918, and I have been truly honored to serve as its organizer for the past 30 years.

None of this would be possible without the unwavering support of my family and friends—who are family to me. I am truly blessed to have you all in my life.

With deepest gratitude,
Sara Sterry Rutter
