Eye-Opening Advances in Retinopathy Treatment for Diabetes

A cardiovascular risk score already used routinely in primary care may help identify people at high risk of developing vision-threatening eye diseases later in life, according to researchers at UCLA Health.

The study found that people with higher cardiovascular risk scores were significantly more likely to develop conditions including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, retinal vein occlusion, and hypertensive retinopathy.

Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve. This damage can lead to vision loss or blindness. The optic nerve sends visual information from your eye to the brain and is vital for good vision. Damage to the optic nerve is often related to high pressure in the eye. But glaucoma can happen even with typical eye pressure.

Glaucoma can happen at any age, but it is more common in older adults. It is one of the leading causes of blindness among people over 60.

Schedule a comprehensive eye exam with your eye care professional this month. Encourage your loved ones to schedule theirs as well to protect their vision.
