(Had to share this post from Sean Boyle For those of you who may not know, Kathy hired him to fill her shoes as Director at Children's Services Council of St. Lucie County I remember just how certain and confident Kathy was in her decision)

So this happened yesterday, and the word that keeps popping into my mind is grateful. Grateful that the St Lucie County Chamber of Commerce partners with us each year to make this happen. Grateful that so many of our program partners came to share the impact we make together. Grateful that business community sees the impact of serving children and how they have embraced the work of the Children's Services Council of St. Lucie County and all of its program partners. Grateful to highlight amazing champions for children (Kasey Blair, Clorisse Stephens, Randy Parker and Bernadette Dowd Urbina) while also honoring Kathryn A. Basile Foster A Dream Foundation. Grateful for such a community driven board that jumped in to be part of the program. Grateful for the CSC Team that pulled together all the end of year information quickly so we could truly demonstrate the impact.

Like I said - grateful!!!

So grateful for you Sean! Kathy is super proud of you!!

Teens get a bad rep when it comes to, well, everything. The stereotype of headstrong, rebellious teens is especially problematic in foster care, where very few caregivers are willing to take them in. Instead, most teens end up in group care and many age out without family.

This is what local foster mom Carrie Facen has to say about that:

Why do you foster teens?

Carrie: I like working with teenagers because they are at an age when you can build a relationship that will serve them in adulthood and that can be passed down to their children.

What keeps you going when things get tough?

Carrie: There is no doubt that teenagers are challenging to work with, but every child in care is different; I find that a personal relationship with God helps tremendously. All children need a solid foundation built on communication; if they are comfortable with you, then you can turn the key and move forward.

What are some things that help make fostering possible for you?

Carrie: I find that it's helpful when all parents are working together, and, for me, it also helps a great deal if the child's family is working with you and trusts you; when children can see the both of you working together, it helps the placement so much.

Can you share a personal experience?

Carrie: I had a placement that lasted eight years for a young lady. The thing I most enjoyed was working with parents who were open to working together; it just makes the child more comfortable.

Many people say they can't foster because they can't bare to loose a child. What do you say about that?

Carrie: When a child is reunited, that is a glorious victory! Fostering is one thing but foster-care ministry is everything; with a team effort and continuing to accept knowledge and open honest communication, you can do it.

We had a great luncheon with Steve Basile, president of the Kathryn A. Basile Foster a Dream Foundation. FAD provides funding for things that help young adults and teens in foster care transition into adulthood. Over the years, those items include graduation expenses, transportation to and from school and computers for college. Thank you Kathryn A. Basile Foster A Dream Foundation!

To see success, imagine success. How does it look to be successful? How does it feel? What can you do today to get there?

Success is built one good habit at a time. May you make your good dreams come true.

Yesterday marked the 12th anniversary of my sister Kathy's passing. We all still miss her so very much. No one would've loved and enjoyed all the little ones in our family more than her. Our twin granddaughters were born on September 7th... the same date as Kathy's passing. It's no coincidence to me that she was Whitney's guardian Angel that day. And then continued to be the girls' guardian Angel as they both fought in the NICU. Sean Boyle recently thanked Kathy for playing a major role in the trajectory of his very successful career. Sean, Kathy and I actually talked about you being the one she wanted to fill her shoes. I remember she was quite adamant about you getting that job! Here she was in Hospice, advocating for you and creating the foundation. Clearly one unique, super smart, very special , and humble woman who left this earth way too soon. I know she's looking down on all of us and Sean, she knew you'd be the perfect fit for that job, those were her exact words to me and you not only met her expectations but exceeded them as well! She's super proud of you!! We love you Kathy and not a day goes by without thinking of you. ❤️
